Dimethoate degradation in plants and during processing of yerba maté leaves

Abstract: The objective of this research was to study degradation kinetics of dimethoate in plants of Ilex paraguariensis Saint Hilaire (or yerba maté) and during its processing. To determine dimethoate concentration, a capillary gas chromatography technique with a mass selective detector was used. Half-life times in plants ranked between 9.8 and 11.8 days. During processing, with a blanching and two drying steps, dimethoate concentration decayed to a 22.7% of its initial value (in dry basis); while during seasoning ste… Show more

“…Com relação ao processamento após a colheita, a erva-mate é submetida ao tratamento que consiste basicamente em sapeco, secagem, cancheamento, classificação e descanso ou maturação (SCHMALKO e ALZAMORA, 2001; ESMELINDRO et al, SCHMALKO et al, 2002).…”

“…Two distinct products named “green mate” and “mate tea” can be obtained from the industrial processing of yerba mate, which are used to prepare mate infusions. Green mate is obtained after blanching (operation performed with hot gases at temperatures above 500 °C), crushing, and drying of leaves and twigs of yerba mate , and mate tea is obtained by the roasting of green mate (160 °C for approximately 12 min) . The green mate is used to prepare the most traditional tealike beverage of South America known as “chimarrão”.…”

“…Dimethoate is not recommended to treat IP fields. However, it is used to control Psyllidae, its principal pest [28]. Conversely, there are no references of the direct use of glyphosate and ammonium glufosinate in IP culture.…”
