Infection imaging with radiopharmaceuticals in the 21st century

Abstract: Infection continues to be a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Nuclear medicine has an important role in aiding the diagnosis of particularly deep-seated infections such as abscesses, osteomyelitis, septic arthritis, endocarditis, and infections of prosthetic devices. Established techniques such as radiolabelled leucocytes are sensitive and specific for inflammation but do not distinguish between infective and non-infective inflammation. The challenge for Nuclear medicine in infection imaging in… Show more

“…Recently, Welling, et al reported several radiopharmaceutical that potentially used to detect infections (Welling., 2009). In addition, several studies reported that 99m Tc as an imaging agent for infections have used in some cases (Dass et al, 2002), for instance, by Awaludin and colleagues (Awaludin, 2011). In their review, they showed that 99m Tc is widely used in nuclear medicine, including for imaging infectious diseases.…”

“…Clinicians use a variety of laboratory, clinical, pathological, and radiological tests to aid diagnosis and make a decision. Although radiological techniques such as X-ray, ultrasound, computerized tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging are commonly used, these techniques are of limited use due to insignificant anatomical changes in the early stages of the infection process (Das et al, 2002;El-Ghany et al, 2005a).…”
