SummaryBackgroundNicotinism is the most common addiction in Poland. Nicotine dependence is the cause of numerous behavioral diseases, including ischemic heart disease, neoplasms and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. A question arises whether a tendency to anxiety and depressive reactions, as well as the strategies of coping with stressful situations, is involved in the clinical presentation of this addiction.Material/MethodsThe study was conducted in a group of 88 nicotine addicts without serious systemic comorbidities and in 84 healthy subjects. All the participants were assessed with Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS).ResultsThe mean intensity of anxiety as a trait and anxiety as a state, as well as its level, were found to differ between the groups (Sten 6.28±1.52 and 4.86±1.05, p=0,0000 for the trait, and 6.09±1.25 and 4.92±1.29, p=0.0000, for the state, respectively). Similarly, depression was demonstrated to be more intensive in nicotine addicts than in healthy subjects (12.76 points ±4.77 vs. 10.76±4.83, p=0.007). Among the 5 scales assessed by CISS, smokers demonstrated higher prevalence of emotion-oriented coping than controls (standard 9 6.27±1.70 in smokers vs. 5.67±1.57, p=0.019) and involvement in distracting activities (5.84±1.48 vs. 5.28±1.46, p=0.014).ConclusionsThe obtained results indicate that anxiety and depression, as well as differences in coping with stress situations, distinguish nicotine addicts from non-smokers.

RESUMOO objetivo deste estudo foi investigar relações entre habilidades sociais e envolvimento com álcool, crack, maconha e nicotina em uma amostra composta por 47 pessoas admitidas em tratamento ambulatorial por abuso ou dependência dessas drogas. Foram utilizados o Inventário de Habilidades Sociais e o Teste de Triagem do Envolvimento com Álcool, Cigarro e Outras Substâncias. Os resultados mostraram correlações significativas entre as variáveis, com a variância do envolvimento com substâncias sendo explicada entre 10% e 44% pelas habilidades sociais. Os resultados apoiam a hipótese de que déficits no repertório geral de habilidades sociais não são necessariamente uma característica do abuso ou dependência de álcool e outras drogas, mas que classes e contextos específicos podem predizer o envolvimento com as substâncias.Palavras-chave: habilidades sociais; álcool; cocaína crack; drogas. ABSTRACT Social Skills as Predictors of Alcohol and Other Drugs Involvement:An Exploratory Study The aim of this study was to investigate the relations between social skills and involvement with alcohol, crack cocaine, marijuana and nicotine in a sample composed by 47 people admitted to outpatient treatment for abuse or dependence on these drugs. Social Skills Inventory and Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test were used. The results showed significant correlations between variables, with the substances involvement variance being explained between 10% and 44% by social skills. Objective: To report the development and validation of the Crack Use Relapse Scale (CURS) in an inpatient population. Methods: A pilot study with 30 male crack users was conducted to generate 35 sentences related to the construct of interest. A five-point Likert scale including 25 items and, initially, nine theoretical factors was generated and utilized in a cross-sectional study with a sample of 333 hospitalized male crack users. Results: Overall Cronbach's alpha was a = 0.86. The exploratory factor analysis (EFA) with oblimin rotation kept the 25 items (factor loadings . 0.40) and six definitive factors, which explained 62.1% of the total variance. Conclusions:The six-factor model yielded by the EFA of the CURS reflects the various dimensions of the construct, assigning satisfactory values and demonstrating good psychometric properties, including validity and reliability.
