Levels of supplementation for grazing pregnant beef cows during the dry season

Abstract: -The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different levels of multiple supplement supply on the nutritional characteristics and productive performance of pregnant cows grazing on Brachiaria decumbens Stapf. during the dry season. The experimental area was composed of four 3.0 ha paddocks with availability of potentially digestible dry matter of 2,582 kg/ha. Twenty-eight crossbred pregnant cows with predominance of Zebu breed at body weight of 446±12 kg were utilized in a completely randomized … Show more

“…Cabral et al [ 13 ] supplemented pregnant cows grazing pastures in similar conditions to the present study, but with different amounts of supplement per day, and observed a quadratic pattern in performance, with cows receiving 1.0 kg of supplement daily gaining more BW. The total amount of supplement provided for the 1.0 kg treatment in Cabral’s work (84 kg) was similar to the present study (90 kg).…”

“…The DMP as an individual parameter is not a good parameter to characterize pastures, because it does not provide information on the nutritive value of available pastures (Cabral, Paulino, Paula, Valadares, & Araújo, ). Therefore, the pasture management based on the pdDMP supply would be a natural evolution of concepts, since it integrates quantity and nutritive value regardless of the time of year.…”

“…In this situation, there is disagreement among some authors on the protein and energy levels that should be provided by the supplement to optimize the pasture use, since several works (Cabral, Paulino, Paula, Valadares, & Araújo, 2012;Cabral et al, 2014a;Cabral et al, 2014b) reported that increasing supplement supply without adequate protein and energy levels promotes an imbalance of nutrients and impairs animal performance.…”
