The work was aimed to evaluate testicular alterations induced by administration of immunocastration vaccine in Donkeys. A total of 12 adult Donkeys from the Northeast breed of Brazil were randomly distributed into control group (CG; n = 04) and immunocastration group (IG; n = 08). Donkeys from IG received two doses of Bopriva ® administered in an 30-day interval (Days 0 and 30). Blood samples were collected for testosterone dosage in this 30-day interval, when donkeys were weighted and measured for testicular biometry (testicular volume and tone). At the end of the experiment (Day 120), all donkeys were subjected to surgical castration in order to obtain testicular samples for histopathological analysis and from epididymis for evaluation of sperm cells. There was no difference in live weight (P > 0.05) within CG and IG groups during the experiment, however testosterone concentrations in IG donkeys were significantly (P < 0.05) lower after 30 and 60 days after the first vaccine, remaining in such levels until the end of the experiment. The CG did not show variations in testosterone levels during the experiment. No evidence of functional sperm cells was found in testis of IG donkeys, despite normal gametogenesis in CG. Testis from IG donkeys showed alterations in consistency and volume, suggesting a degenerative process, further confirmed by typical histopathological alterations of such pathology. Donkeys from the CG did not display these alterations. In IG donkeys, the ductal lumen of the epididymis ductal was dilated, filled with proteinaceous and eosinophilous content alongside with acidofilous germ cells. Furthermore, azoospermia was found in 75 % of IG donkeys, while remaining animals showed extremely low sperm concentration and no visible motility. Finally, immunocastration is an effective approach for male donkey castration due to its low cost and ease execution with no interference on animal welfare principles.

Some horse breeds are highly selected for athletic activities. The athletic potential of each animal can be measured by its performance in sports. High athletic performance depends on the animal capacity to produce energy through aerobic and anaerobic metabolic pathways, among other factors. Transmembrane proteins called monocarboxylate transporters, mainly the isoform 1 (MCT1) and its ancillary protein CD147, can help the organism to adapt to physiological stress caused by physical exercise, transporting lactate and H+ ions. Horse breeds are selected for different purposes so we might expect differences in the amount of those proteins and in the genotypic frequencies for genes that play a significant role in the performance of the animals. The study of MCT1 and CD147 gene polymorphisms, which can affect the formation of the proteins and transport of lactate and H+, can provide enough information to be used for selection of athletic horses increasingly resistant to intense exercise. Two other candidate genes, the PDK4 and DMRT3, have been associated with athletic potential and indicated as possible markers for performance in horses. The oxidation of fatty acids is highly effective in generating ATP and is controlled by the expression of PDK4 (pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase, isozyme 4) in skeletal muscle during and after exercise. The doublesex and mab-3 related transcription factor 3 (DMRT3) gene encodes an important transcription factor in the setting of spinal cord circuits controlling movement in vertebrates and may be associated with gait performance in horses. This review describes how the monocarboxylate transporters work during physical exercise in athletic horses and the influence of polymorphisms in candidate genes for athletic performance in horses.

ResumoA babesiose tem sido descrita como uma das principais enfermidades na equideocultura brasileira, gerando consideráveis perdas econômicas, o que exige diagnóstico rápido e eficaz. O objetivo deste estudo foi comparar a sensibilidade de três técnicas diagnósticas diretas na detecção dessa doença, sendo elas:a pesquisa do hemocitozoário em esfregaços de sangue total, periférico eobtido por punção esplênica. Foram submetidos ao estudo 13 equinos com faixa etária entre 07 e 20 anos e peso médio de 341 kg. As coletas foram realizadas entre os meses de janeiro e março de 2014. Das técnicas avaliadas, o esfregaço sanguíneo de punção esplênica apresentou maior sensibilidade na identificação de animais positivos quando comparado às demais. The blood samples were collected between January and March of 2014. The splenic punction blood smear was more sensitive to identify positive animals in comparison to the other two techniques.
