-Intake and total and ruminal digestibility, ruminal characteristics and microbial synthesis efficiency in bovine and bubaline fed sugar cane silages treated with microbial additive Lactobacillus buchneri (inoculate) and the addition of: cassava byproduct meal at 250 g/kg; soybean hulls at 250 g/kg; and urea at 33 g/kg, in natural matter were evaluated. The forage:concentrate ratio was 600:400 g/kg. Bubaline body weight (BW) was 403±49 kg and bovine BW was 492±10 kg. The experimental design consisted of two 4 × 4 Latin squares in a 4 × 2 factorial arrangement. The average DM intake did not differ between species, and the diet with urea showed lowest intake (13 g/kg BW). Among the diets, the one with soybean hulls addition increased the total digestibility of DM, organic matter (OM) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF), while addition of urea reduced the DM, OM and non-fibrous carbohydrates (NFC) total digestibility in both species. Bovines have higher ruminal digestibility of NFC in the diet with addition of inoculate, inoculate + soybean meal and inoculate + urea diets than bubaline.Ruminal liquid pH was higher for bubaline (6.61) than bovines (6.48). Diets with addition of cassava byproduct and soybean hulls presented higher ruminal short chain fatty acids concentrations. Ruminal ammonia concentration (N-NH 3 ) did not differ between species and the treatment with urea presented the highest value of N-NH 3 (17.25 mg/100 mL). Liquid passage rate was higher for bubaline (12.9%/h) than bovines (9.9%/h). Bubaline has higher microbial synthesis efficiency than bovine:35.1 vs 24.6 g of N-microbial/kg OM of the total rumen digestibility, regardless of the diet.

This study evaluated the Propolis product (LLOS) effects on feed intake, dry matter (DM) and nutrients total digestibility, rumen characteristics and microbial efficiency in buffaloes fed a roughage based diet (70% Cynodon spp hay and 30% concentrate). Using a 4¥4 latin square design, four crossbred buffalo (Murrah x Jafarabadi) steers (519.0±13.0 kg body weight - BW), were fed four treatments with three LLOS concentrations: Control (no LLOS), LLOS B3+ (0.272 mg/g flavonoid chrysin equivalents), LLOS C1 (0.092 mg/g flavonoid chrysin equivalents), and LLOS C1+ (0.184 mg/g flavonoid chrysin equivalents). Diet formulation was 60% total digestible nutrient (TDN) and 11% crude protein (CP). No difference was observed in DM intake among experimental diets (P>0.05). Steers fed LLOS C1 had greater (P<0.05) coefficients of digestibility for DM (67.2 vs 62.7%), organic matter (OM) (68.1 vs 63.7%), neutral detergent fibre (NDF) (61.7 vs 56.6%), total carbohydrates (TCHO) (67.7 vs 63.2%) and TDN (66.1 vs 62.8%) compared to animals fed the control diet. LLOS C1 provided greatest (P<0.05) short chain fatty acids (SCFA) production (141.89 vs 129.15 μM/mL) and butyric production (16.15 vs 14.05 μM/mL) compared to control. The lowest rumen pH (6.65; P<0.05) was observed in steers fed diets with LLOS C1. No difference (P>0.05) was observed for ammoniacal nitrogen (N-NH3), solid and liquid passage rate and microbial efficiency among treatments. The natural additive products (propolis or essential oils), in replacing antibiotics, could be used as an alternative for feed strategies to improve animal production. This work was performed to evaluate the effect of natural additives as propolis or essential oils on meat quality of crossbred (Aberdeen Angus vs. Nellore) bulls. Thirty bulls were kept in feedlot (individual pen) for 55 d and randomly assigned to one of three diets (n = 10): control (CON), propolis (PRO), or essential oils (OIL). CON diet consists of corn silage (45% DM) and concentrate (cracked corn, soybean meal, glycerin, limestone, and mineral salt, 55% DM). The PRO group received same CON diet plus 3 g animal -1 d -1 of propolis premix added to the concentrate. The OIL group received same CON diet and 3 g animal -1 d -1 of a premix (cashew Anacardium occidentale L. and castor Ricinus communis L. oils) added to the concentrate. Fat thickness (5.0 mm), pH (5.9), Longissimus muscle area 58.0 cm 2 , marbling, texture, color (L* = 36.6, a* = 17.3, and b* = 5.9), lipid oxidation (0.08 malonaldehyde kg -1 meat), and WarnerBratzler shear force (3.3 kg) were unaffected by the diet. PRO and OIL diets had no effect neither on moisture (73.7%), ashes (1.1%), protein (23.8%), and lipids (1.7%), fatty acid composition or polyunsaturated/saturated fatty acid (PUFA/ SFA, 0.13), and n-6/n-3 ratio (6.9) on Longissimus muscle. Addition of natural additives as propolis extract or cashew and castor oils in the diet of bulls when they are finished in a feedlot did not change meat qualities.
