The objective of this study was to compare the efficacy of two sources of omega 3 and 6, fish oil (FO) and linseed oil (LO), orally administered, alone or in combination, for treating experimentally induced keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) in rabbits. Twenty-eight New Zealand rabbits were used in this study. Seven animals were allocated to the C group (negative control), and KCS was induced in 21 animals by topically applying 1% atropine sulfate drops for 7 days. Treatment with atropine was maintained throughout the study period (12 weeks). The rabbits were divided into 3 treatment groups containing 7 animals each: FO group, LO group and FLO group (FO and LO). The animals were evaluated using the Schirmer Tear Test I (STT I), Rose Bengal Test (RBT), fluorescein test (FT), tear film break-up time (TBUT), and conjunctival and histopathological analysis. There was a significant increase in STT I and TBUT values in treatment groups, but the increase occurred earlier in the FO group. The results of the RBT and FT were similar among treatment groups, except FT, in the FLO group, negative staining was only in 12 weeks. There was a significant decrease in the number of goblet cells in the FLO group compared with the other groups. The results demonstrated that orally administered of FO and LO improved the clinical signs of KCS. However, improvement occurred earlier in the FO group. Using oils in combination did not provide additional benefits. These results contribute to the future development of new oral formulations as adjuvant therapies for KCS.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengukur pengaruh pemberian minyak jagung dalam pakan terhadap kadar estrogen serum darah, hirarki folikular dan produktivitas burung puyuh. Sebanyak 30 ekor burung puyuh betina dibagi menjadi tiga perlakuan. Perlakuan kontrol diberi pakan komersial tanpa suplementasi minyak jagung, sedangkan perlakuan P1 dan P2 diberi pakan komersial dengan suplementasi minyak jagung sebanyak 3% dan 6%. Setiap hari dilakukan pencatatan terhadap produktivitas. Setelah delapan minggu, dilakukan koleksi sampel darah, kemudian semua burung puyuh dikorbankan nyawanya untuk mengamati hirarki folikular yang terbentuk. Pada P1 dan P2 tidak telihat perbedaan yang nyata terhadap peningkatan kadar estrogen serum darah dan produktivitas dibandingkan dengan P0, akan tetapi terlihat perbedaan nyata pada hirarki folikular yang terbentuk. Hasil ini menunjukkan bahwa peningkatan hirarki folikular yang terbentuk terjadi karena peningkatan kinerja ovarium dipicu oleh polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) yang berasal konsumsi minyak jagung. Dengan demikian, suplementasi minyak jagung dapat dijadikan alternatif untuk meningkatkan produksi telur dalam peternakan burung puyuh.

O conhecimento científico sobre nutrição de animais de companhia tem aumentado de forma contínua, acompanhando o fenômeno visto em diversas áreas de conhecimento. Na última década, têm-se prioritariamente pesquisas direcionadas ao uso de nutrientes na promoção de saúde, prevenção de doenças degenerativas, melhoria da qualidade de vida e aumento da expectativa de vida de cães e gatos. Este direcionamento de pesquisas é, em grande parte, explicado pela importância que cães e gatos assumiram na vida das pessoas, fazendo com que as decisões alimentares dos proprietários com seus animais se assemelhassem às que adotam para si próprios. A publicação da nova revisão do Nutrient Requirements of Dogs and Cats em 2006 foi, talvez, o avanço recente mais significativo, trazendo novo entendimento sobre necessidades energéticas e de nutrientes nas diferentes fases de desenvolvimento e estados fisiológicos. Apesar destes avanços, ainda são necessárias pesquisas na área de caracterização físico-química e de utilização dos ingredientes, efeitos do processo de extrusão e mesmo de necessidades nutricionais, que conta com uma base pequena de artigos disponíveis, a maioria antiga. Talvez os desafios científicos mais importantes em nutrição de cães e gatos sejam metabolismo de carboidratos, importância da massa corporal magra na saúde, urolitíases, gerontologia, relação entre microbiota intestinal e saúde, imunonutrição e manejo nutricional em condições clínicas específicas importantes para estas espécies.
