Show more

“…The expected lower osmotic stress because of chemical characteristics of dimethylformamide was not reflected in the results. The uniformity of the response among animals strongly suggests that dimethylformamide is not an effective cryoprotectant agent for ovine sperm cells as it is for caprine, canine, swine and equine sperm cells (Vidament et al 2002;Alvarenga et al 2005;Silva et al 2006;Bianchi et al 2008). Differences in sperm membrane structure among species are more likely to be the origin of the poor results.…”

“…However, depending on the concentration used, glycerol may cause direct injury to cells, to which is added the damage that freezing temperatures inflict on spermatozoa (reviewed by Fahy et al 1990). The cryoprotectant effect of dimethylformamide, an organic compound, has been successfully tested for sperm preservation in several species (Vidament et al 2002;Alvarenga et al 2005;Silva et al 2006;Bianchi et al 2008). Because of its lower molecular weight and viscosity, it is supposed that dimethylformamide induces less osmotic damage than glycerol.…”
