Comparison of lactate values obtained from different sites and their clinical significance in patients with severe sepsis

Abstract: CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: The ideal site for lactate collection has not been clearly established. This study aimed to evaluate associations between lactate levels in arterial blood (Lart), peripheral venous blood (Lper) and central venous blood (Lcen) in patients with severe sepsis or septic shock. DESIGN AND SETTING:Cross-sectional analytical study in an tertiary university hospital. METHOD:Samples from patients with a central venous catheter and from healthy volunteers (control group) were collected. Blood was … Show more

“…Additionally, reports on effects of sampling sites on lactate blood levels in dogs 1,14 and humans 15 suggest that values obtained from peripheral venous blood may tend to overestimate the actual lactate level due to differences in regional lactate kinetics. 1,14,15 This may also apply to our report, since we analysed samples from the auricular vein, while other authors used jugular or cava blood to determine blood lactate values. 5,7,9,11 The observed significant difference in blood lactate levels of LxPI compared with RHxPI pigs in our animals is in accordance to authors reporting a genetic influence on lactate blood values in pigs.…”

“…Different results were reported by Nascente et al (26) In a unicentric, analytical, cross-sectional study, the authors evaluated the association between lactate values obtained from different puncture sites (arterial, central venous and peripheral venous) in patients with severe sepsis/septic shock, with an emphasis on the impact of these values on clinical management. Two hundred and thirty-eight lactate measurements were performed.…”

“…The length of exposure to the damaging stimulus determines the reversibility of the organ dysfunction (2-3). Therefore, early detection of sepsis and organ dysfunction is important in critically ill patients in order to begin appropriate therapeutic measures [1, 2]. …”
