Abstract: CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: Serological testing for CA125 has been widely used to detect endometriosis and to monitor its progression. However, controversy still exists regarding the usefulness of the plasma CA125 assay for diagnosing endometriosis. Furthermore, some authors have described superficial endometriosis as a cyclical and normal phenomenon in women's lives, and have indicated that development and progression of this disease would only occur in some women as a result of immunological changes. This study a… Show more

“…According to Barbosa et al (2009) [12], the prevalence of endometriosis in Brazilian women (without any symptoms of endometriosis like infertility, dysmenorrhea, and/or pelvic pain) submitted to tubal sterilization surgery is 16.25 %. In our study, absence of endometriosis in all controls was confirmed by inspection of the pelvic cavity during the laparoscopy.…”

“…It is characterized by the implantation, growth, and development of endometrial tissue in extrauterine sites (1,2). Several studies have revealed a large number of genetic markers related to the immune system function and neuroendocrine and reproductive behavior of patients with endometriosis, indicating an association between the development of the disease and genetic polymorphisms (3)(4)(5).…”

“…Serum CA-125 levels were significantly higher in DIE group (55.2 ± 68.7 U/mL) compared to controls (22.5 ± 25.2 U/mL; < .001). Some hypotheses tried to explain this increase: presence of blood and eutopic endometrial tissue into the peritoneal cavity due to retrograde menses, enlarged surface of endometrial tissue, and inflammatory reaction in the endometrial foci [18]. Bon et al suggested that CA-125 released from the endometrium can have access to the lymphatics and the circulation [19].…”
