“…12,14,29-35 In other regions in Brazil, where there is a greater proportion of non-whites, the SSM percentage is lower. 16,22 Fernandes et al found a predominance of LM/LMM (29.8%), as did the present study. 21 Despite the fact that the difference in proportion between LM/LMM (35.7%) and SSM (35.1%) found in this sample was small, the frequency of LM/LMM is still higher than that reported in the literature (5 to 10%), just as SSM is less frequent when compared with studies in which a white population is predominant (70%).…”

“…SSM tends to occur at sites prone to intense, sporadic sun-exposure, especially the trunk and extremities [3,4]. It usually presents as an irregularly shaped cutaneous macule larger than 6 mm in size with variegation of color including light brown, dark brown, black, pink, red, blue, and gray, which is particularly menacing when thicker, with ulceration or bleeding [5][6][7]. Dermoscopy is used to distinguish SSM from melanocytic nevi, solar lentigines, seborrheic keratosis, pigmented basal cell carcinoma, and pigmented mammary Paget's disease [8,9].…”

“…As the most aggressive form of skin cancer, cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM) frequently affects young individuals, with a mean age of 50 years (Ferrari et al, 2008). Because of the resistance to current conventional therapeutic methods of CMM, approximately 13,000 deaths of CMM happen every year, but this has not been paralleled by the development of new therapeutic agents with an ideal effect (Finn et al, 2012).Therefore, efforts to develop new therapeutic approaches are in urgent need.…”
