“…There were no significant differences when the parameters were analyzed according to gender. The observed prevalence in our study (28.9% presenting overweight) was higher than what was reported by Rodrigues et al 13 in 1989, among Brazilian children less than four years of age. Recently, in Mexico, Fernald and Neufeld also observed a high prevalence of overweight among preschool children aged two and three years: respectively 19.8% and 23.7%.…”

“…It is possible to observe countries with very different prevalence of excess body mass, both in different age groups and genders. For example, there is a much lower prevalence of excess body mass in children in Brazil (8.6%) (Rodrigues, Taddei, & Sigulem, ) and South Korea (Park, Lee, Dong, Lee, & Lee, ) (12.6% of boys and 10.6% of girls) than in the USA (17.1%) (Ogden et al, ), Mexico (16.7%) (Hernández‐Cordero et al, ), and England (33.3%) (Jaarsveld & Gulliford, ). The same effect is seen in adolescents of both sexes across the five countries, showing that consideration of sampling method is necessary to understand the allometric adjustment.…”
