Processing of high performance composites based on peek by aqueous suspension prepregging

Abstract: The use of polyamic acid (PAA) precursor as interphase in polymer composites is one of the many applications of polyimides (PIs). In this work, composites based on poly(ether-ether-ketone) (PEEK) and carbon fibers were prepared using two manufacturing techniques for thermoplastic composites: hot compression molding, and aqueous polymeric suspension prepregging using PIs as interphase. Two PAAs were synthesized and used as interphases: 3,3'-4,4'-benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride/oxydianiline (BTDA/ODA) an… Show more

“…The successful transformation from PAA to PI was also confirmed by the FT-IR measurement as shown in Supporting Information Figure S1. In the spectrum from the PI sheet, the C–N amide band at 1542 cm –1 disappeared, while the characteristic absorption bands of imide groups near 1778, 1724, 1377, and 721 cm –1 were present . The dehydration from PAA to PI is crucial for successful formation of LIG and will be discussed in detail below.…”

“…In the spectrum from the PI sheet, the CÀN amide band at 1542 cm À1 disappeared, while the characteristic absorption bands of imide groups near 1778, 1724, 1377, and 721 cm À1 were present. 41 The dehydration from PAA to PI is crucial for successful formation of LIG and will be discussed in detail below. Finally, a standard CO 2 laser cutting system was used under ambient conditions to convert PI/H 3 BO 3 to xB-LIG (x = 0, 1, 2, 5, and 8, which denotes the initial H 3 BO 3 loading weight percentages).…”

“…Poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) and poly(ether ketone ketone) (PEKK) excited interests in various sectors because of their good mechanical properties and their solvent resistance. Their high-mechanical properties made them suitable as structural material for medical applications [1,2], polymer blends for gas separation membranes [3], nanocomposites [4][5][6][7] and polymer matrices for high-performance composites [8][9][10][11]. The thermal stability of PAEKs was widely investigated [12,13].…”

“…[30] The impregnation can be improved by using PAEK dispersions, also called as wet powders. [23,24,31,32] However, the problem of small impregnation depth still exists. Furthermore, the composition is also realized by commingling PAEK fibers with CFs to form co-wrapped yarns.…”
