Determining the chemical composition of medicinal plants used for therapeutic purposes is of fundamental importance. These plants must meet quality standards for commercialization by ensuring pharmacological properties and efficacy. However, for the maintenance of their active compounds, it is very important to store them at a suitable temperature and ensure the safety of these compounds. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of different temperatures and storage periods in the maintenance of chemical composition of bushy lippia (Lippia alba), crajiru (Arrabidaea chica), eucalyptus (Eucalyptus grandis), lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus), citronella (Cymbopogon nardus) and sage (Lippia microphylla) leaves. Leaves of these medicinal plants were stored for different periods (30, 60 and 90 days) at different temperatures (0, 17 and 24 °C). A complete randomized design was used with five replications, each one with 150g of leaves. For each combination of temperature and storage period, different variables were evaluated such as phenolic compounds, total anthocyanins, antioxidant activity (ORAC and DPPH), carotenoids and chlorophyll contents. Leaves stored at 0°C resulted in the most efficient preservation of chemical compounds at 30, 60 and 90 days. However, this temperature causes physiological damage to the leaves. Therefore, for commercial use, dried or crushed leaves in the form of powder is recommended. Storage at 17 °C keeps the chemical composition of the leaves at satisfactory levels, while at 24 °C there is a significant decrease over the periods of cold storage.

Diseases transmitted by the mosquito Aedes aegypti, Culicidae, are a serious public health problem worldwide, especially because of the increasing resistance to synthetic insecticides. Volatile oils are botanicals with interesting multi-target properties, but with reduced applications due to its volatility and water solubility. For this reason, nanoemulsions containing volatile oils are an important alternative for the mosquito control. The volatile oil of leaves Piper alatipetiolatum Yunck., Piperaceae, was characterized mostly by sesquiterpenes, such as ishwarone (78.6%), ishwarol B (8.2%), β-elemene (6.9%), selin-11-en-4α-ol (2.9%), and ishwarane (2.4%). The volatile oil showed lower ovicidal activity (19 to 100%), larvicidal activity (LC 50 33.74 ppm), and pupicidal activity (LC 50 65.06 ppm) as compared with its nanoemulsion that presented higher ovicidal activity (47.7 to 100%), larvicidal activity (LC 50 6.37 ppm), and pupicidal activity (LC 50 9.33 ppm) against Ae. aegypti. The volatile oil nanoemulsion was characterized with approximately spherical morphology, with an average size of 316 ± 8 nm, PDI of 0.44 ± 0.01, zeta potential of − 8.5 ± 0.1 mV, and pH of 5.3 ± 0.1. These results indicated that the nanoemulsion containing the encapsulated volatile oil was effective to interrupt the development of immature forms of Ae. aegypti and represents an efficient alternative tool to control this vector, contributing to vector control of dengue and other related diseases.

RESUMO Campomanesia adamantium é muito utilizada na medicina popular no tratamento de hipertensão, reumatismo e diabetes. Objetivou-se com o presente trabalho avaliar o rendimento, a composição química, e as atividades antimicrobiana e antioxidante do óleo essencial de folhas de C. adamantium submetidas a diferentes métodos e tempos de secagem. O delineamento utilizado foi inteiramente casualizado, com oito tratamentos e três repetições. O óleo essencial foi extraído por hidrodestilação das folhas e analisado por CG-EM. O tipo de secagem das folhas de C. adamantium influenciou no teor e na composição química do óleo essencial. Os constituintes espatulenol, óxido cariofileno e germacreno-B apresentaram maior concentração na maioria das procedências avaliadas. O óleo essencial das folhas de C. adamantium apresentou moderada atividade antibacteriana em relação a todos os micro-organismos testados. A atividade antioxidante se deu empregando-se o método de redução do radical estável DPPH, sendo observada fraca atividade antioxidante por meio do ensaio utilizado.
