Abstract: Argentina set a new historical mark in 2002, having experienced the largest debt default by any country ever. In order to understand how Argentina could go from one of the most developed countries of the Third World, to experiencing the crisis of 2001 and then enter a depression in 2002 with over half the population living in poverty, requires an evaluation of the last quarter century of economic policies in Argentina. The shift toward neoliberalism began during the dictatorship of 1976, deepened during the Me… Show more

“…Forest cover is currently being depleted in the poorer countries at the rate of about 140,000 km 2 per year, 28 and if the World Trade Organization' s efforts to liberalize trade in forest products go forward as planned, the rate of deforestation is expected to increase. 29 The Ramsar convention on wetlands is an intergovernmental treaty providing a framework for the conservation of wetlands and their resources, yet 84% of the wetlands supposedly protected by the treaty are threatened. 30 While we understand marine ecosystems less than terrestrial ones, it seems unimaginable that healthy fish populations do not play a vital role in these ecosystems and the scarcely understood mechanisms by which they provide ecosystem services.…”

“…One way to bring this about would be to impose sustainability criteria. For example, we might decide that the rights of future generations to certain resources, such as the ecosystems responsible for generating life-support functions, are inalienable, 29 much like human and political rights, where entitlements are not decided by efficiency criteria. As we deplete nonrenewable resources, we could invest a sufficient percentage of the profits in renewable substitutes to replace the depleted resource (we'll describe this option in greater detail later).…”

“…In the aftermath of a severe economic crisis that hit Argentina in the early twenty-first century (Cooney 2007;Prange 2015), political leaders have embraced a new wave of neoliberalism and a redoubled commit ment to "free market" principles. Since 2015, the president of the country has been Mauricio Macri, a center-right politician who has worked in business and engineering, and he has sought to accelerate the pace of neoliberal reforms, including the removal of price controls and the shrinking of public expenditures.…”
