Polymorphism of the catechol-O-methyltransferase gene in Han Chinese patients with psoriasis vulgaris

Abstract: Psoriasis vulgaris is defined by a series of linked cellular changes in the skin: hyperplasia of epidermal keratinocytes, vascular hyperplasia and ectasia, and infiltration of T lymphocytes, neutrophils and other types of leukocytes in the affected skin. Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) 158 polymorphism can reduce the activity of the COMT enzyme that may trigger defective differentiation of keratinocytes in psoriasis. Immunocytes can degrade and inactivate catecholamines via monamine oxidase (MAO) and COMT … Show more

“…After the discovery of water splitting by Fujishima and Honda, the photocatalysis technology becomes known as most promising new technology in a fuel cell, purification of air, organic pollutant degradation, self‐cleaning, and antibacterial activity . For the last four decades, various semiconductor photocatalysts, including TiO 2 , WO 3 , SnO 2 and ZnO have been studied in environmental purposes . However, their effective photocatalytic performance is restricted because of their large band gap (not suitable for efficient visible light absorption) and fast rate photogenerated electron–hole recombination .…”

“…Although psoriasis was found to be more common in male (51%), but we found no significant differences in gender between the psoriasis patients and the control group (P = 0.2). This finding is suggested by Gao et al [27] whom found no significant between patient and control group according to gender (P = 0.2). Other studies showed that disease was more common in female [28].…”

“…This is also in agreement with the findings of Bamshad et al (12) which state that involved areas of skin had greater COMT activity than uninvolved skin areas in psoriasis patients. Moreover, the low activity Met158 COMT polymorphisms was not more frequent in psoriasis patients than in control subjects (11).…”

“…This polymorphism was also investigated in skin disorders, and it may contribute to an increased risk of vitiligo . However, no association was found between this polymorphism and psoriasis vulgaris .…”
