Genetic variability of 10 microsatellite markers in the characterization of Brazilian Nellore cattle (Bos indicus)

Abstract: We assessed the polymorphism of 10 microsatellites in Brazilian Nellore cattle (Bos indicus) using a commercial multiplex system. Allele frequencies, polymorphism information content, heterozygosity and exclusion probability were calculated. Allele frequencies revealed that in the sample analyzed the markers were not equally polymorphic. The exclusion probabilities and the polymorphism information content of some loci in Nellore cattle were lower than in Bos taurus breeds. When all the microsatellites were con… Show more

“…Currently, the majority of the herd comprises exotic breeds of both taurine and zebuine origins and their American derivatives that were imported during the last 100 years (Cervini et al, 2006). The improvement of cattle in Brazil has frequently involved crossings between zebu and taurine cattle as well as between different zebu breeds (Dani et al, 2008).…”

“…Recent studies evaluated the genetic structure and diversity of locally adapted Creole cattle and some commercial breeds in Brazil and other Latin American countries (Cervini et al, 2006;Lirón et al, 2006;Egito et al, 2007;Dani et al, 2008;Delgado et al, 2012). The data reported indicate that variable patterns of breed admixture have occurred since colonial times that have shaped the current genetic status of the local breeds.…”

“…Misidentification of parentage can lead to breeding inaccuracy, causing great financial losses in herd management and in the beef industry (Cervini et al, 2006). A small misidentification percentage excessively endangers genetic patterns estimation.…”

“…In some developed countries, paternity identification using microsatellite markers is established for their cattle populations (Curi and Lopes, 2002;Radko et al, 2005;Cervini et al, 2006;Řehout et al, 2006;Radko 2008;Tian et al, 2008;Carolino et al, 2009;Ozkan et al, 2009). In addition, microsatellites were used for the analyses of genetic diversity in cattle (Čítek and Řehout, 2001;Grzybowski and Prusak, 2004a,b;Zhou et al, 2005;Czerneková et al, 2006;Čítek et al, 2006;Zaton-Dobrowolska et al, 2007).…”

“…Although many of these studies were conducted using European cattle (MacHugh et al, 1998), the Sicilian cattle population has not been studied. Kinship and/or identity analysis for traceability and consanguinity investigations use the allele frequencies of the local population (e.g., Radko et al, 2005;Cervini et al, 2006;Carolino et al, 2009) from a reference database. A reference database did not exist in Sicily until now, and microsatellite analysis has not been performed on Sicilian cattle.…”
