Abstract: The karyotypes of nine species of the family Ramphastidae were determined and compared with that of the toco toucan (Ramphastos toco), the only ramphastid karyotype so far reported in the literature. Differences in the morphology of the largest chromosomes allowed to identify three karyotype groups. The first group included the species R. toco, Baillonius bailloni, Pteroglossus castanotis, P. aracari and Selenidera maculirostris, in which only the first pair of chromosomes was metacentric. The second group inc… Show more

“…Between these two extremes, there are groups of birds that show that 2n = 80 may not be the rule. Among Charadriiformes, with most species ranging from 2n = 78–82, genus Burrhinus includes species with some of the lowest diploid numbers among birds: 2n = 42 [ 50 ] or, in Piciformes, with some species of genus Ramphastus with diploid numbers of more than 100 [ 51 ].…”

“…Moreover, the Z chromosome is conserved in size, between the 3rd and 4th pairs, although its morphology is variable. Some species of Piciformes are an exception to this rule, as their Z chromosomes are the largest in the karyotype (Castro et al 2002). On the other hand, the W chromosome shows variation in morphology when different families of birds are compared (Ohno et al 1964;Takagi and Sasaki 1974;Gunski et al 2000;Correia et al 2009).…”

“…The interest in this group has been increasing exponentially, and several recent papers have reported on comparative studies on morphology, isozymes, hybridization and molecular sequences (e.g. Höfling, 1998;Castro et al, 2002;Barker and Lanyon, 2000). Barker and Lanyon (2000) analyzed 888 cytochrome b base-pairs from at least two species of each genus through a plethora of weighting schemes for maximum parsimony (MP) and proposed a phylogenetic hypothesis involving all Ramphastidae genera.…”
