Selection and genetic gain in rubber tree (Hevea) populations using a mixed mating system

Abstract: The components of genetic variation and genetic gain obtained with three selection methods -individual, combined and multi-effect index selection -were compared in rubber tree [Hevea brasiliensis (Willd. ex Adr. de Juss.) Muell. Arg.] progenies. The rubber tree is a cross pollinating species with a mixed reproductive system in which the self pollination rate is 22%. Twenty-two half sib progenies were planted at experimental stations at Pindorama, Votuporanga and Jaú, in São Paulo State, using a randomized and … Show more

“…These data agreed with the results of Costa et al (2000a,b), Gonçalves et al (1998Gonçalves et al ( , 1999, Boock et al (1995) and Moreti et al (1994). Gonçalves et al (1998Gonçalves et al ( , 1999 reported individual plant heritabilities of h i 2 = 0.37 and h i 2 = 0.51 for the yield of rubber, whereas Costa et al (2000a) and Boock et al (1995) (Gonçalves et al, 1999) and h i 2 = 0.31 (Moreti et al, 1994) were obtained at Pindorama and h i 2 = 0.47 (Boock et al, 1995) at Votuporanga. These results indicate that these two traits have moderately low heritability estimates and imply that there is a need to increase the genetic variability for yield and growth vigor in the population studied here.…”

“…A proximidade entre estes dois valores pode ser avaliada com base na estatística denominada acurácia. A literatura prática pertinente ao assunto apresentada por Resende et al (1995) e Costa et al (2000) tem demonstrado a importância da acurácia para apontar o grau de confiabilidade dos resultados obtidos na avaliação genética.…”
