Morphological and phenological characters are used in the selection, breeding, and description of plant varieties with varying genotypes. The stability of these descriptors in the face of environmental changes can determine their usefulness in situations where plant varieties must be reliably identified. The objective of this study was to verify the expression of morphological and phenological descriptors and use them to distinguish between white oat cultivars (Avena sativa L.) in two growing periods. For this, five cultivars, protected and belonging to four breeders, referred to as G1, G2, G3, G4, and G5, were sown in the typical growing season in southern Brazil (autumn-winter) and outside that period (winter-spring), and grown for forty days. The experiment was established in the field, in a randomized block design replicated three times. The cultivars were evaluated for 42 descriptors (15 quantitative and 27 qualitative). Quantitative data were analyzed by analysis of variance, the comparison of averages, and multivariate analysis by generating average euclidean distances. Qualitative data were analyzed by mode determination, followed by obtaining the similarity index. The relationship between cultivars was illustrated by dendrograms. The stability index for each descriptor was calculated. A genotype x environment interaction was observed for 28 descriptors. The stability of descriptor appearance and persistence over the growing season was higher in qualitative (44%) than in quantitative (7%) descriptors. The most stable qualitative descriptors were lemma color, hairiness of the upper node, flag leaf position, hairiness of the base of the grain, basal grain length, and rachilla length. The most stable quantitative descriptor was flag leaf length. Shifting the white oat growing season from autumn-winter to winter-spring reduced the cycle and modified the expression of most descriptors by changing the phenotypic distinctness between cultivars. Este trabalho foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de verificar a expressão de descritores morfológicos e fenológicos e, consequentemente, a dissimilaridade entre cultivares de aveia-branca (Avena sativa L.) em dois períodos de cultivo. Para isso, cinco cultivares, protegidas e oriundas de quatro obtentores e, aqui, codificadas (G1, G2, G3, G4 e G5), foram semeadas dentro do período recomendado para a cultura no sul do do Brasil (outono-hibernal) e fora desse período (hiberno-primaveril), com intervalo de quarenta dias. A divergência genética entre 22 cultivares de feijoeiro pertencentes ao ensaio de Valor de Cultivo e Uso da Embrapa e IAPAR foi avaliada com o emprego de descritores morfológicos em um experimento de campo conduzido em Cáceres-MT, na unidade experimental da EMPAER. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o de blocos ao acaso com três repetições, e os dados obtidos foram submetidos à análise de dissimilaridade genética baseada em variáveis multicategóricas. Empregou-se a análise métodos de agrupamento hierárquico via UPGMA (Método de Agrupamento Médio Entre Grupos) e a projeção da distância no plano. O emprego de análise de variáveis multicategóricas demonstrou ser eficiente para separar as cultivares em grupos de acordo com os centros de origem mesoamericana e andina. As combinações envolvendo as cultivares BRS Timbó e CNFRx10531; BRS Esplendor e BRS Valente; BRS Grafite e BRS Campeiro se destacaram como as mais similares. As cultivares Iraí e BRS grafite foram as mais divergentes dentre as cultivares avaliadas, portanto, podem ser utilizadas como genitores para a obtenção de populações segregantes superiores em futuros programas de melhoramento genético. The hierarchical clustering methods analysis was used via UPGMA (Unweighted Pair Group Method with Arithmetic Mean), and the distance projection onto a plane. The use of the multicategorical analysis showed to be efficient to separate the cultivars by groups according to their centers of Mesoamerican and Andean origin. The combinations involving cultivars BRS Timbó and CNFRx10531; BRS Esplendor and BRS Valente; BRS Grafite and BRS Campeiro were the most similar. Cultivars Iraí e BRS Grafite were the most devious among the evaluated cultivars, therefore, they may be used as parents to obtain segregate populations in future breeding programs.

Lima bean is a source of income for the rural population of Northeast Brazil because people purchase and consume the imature and mature beans. In this region, all of the germplasms used by farmers come from their own crops or they trade between rural communities. Understanding the genetic diversity of the lima bean germplasm provides important information for both managing germplasm banks and genetic conservation. In this study, we aimed to estimate the genetic diversity between 24 lima bean accessions from the Active GermplasmBank (AGB) at the Universidade Federal do Piauí (UFPI) based on morphoagronomic descriptors. The experiment was conducted under field conditions in lattice design with four replications and ten plants per plot, from February to August 2009. Seven qualitative and six quantitative descriptors were used. Four groups were created for quantitative traits using the Tocher and Unweighted Pair Group Method with Arithmetic Mean (UPGMA) methods, while qualitative traits were divided into three groups using the Tocher method and into six groups using UPGMA. The trait that contributed the most to genetic diversity (35.23%) was pod width. UFPI-220 produced a large number of pods per plant, an important trait for identifying potentially productive accessions. We expect that beneficial combinations can be made between UFPI-220 x UFPI-468 due to both the high level of dissimilarity and the average performance of these accessions. Key words: Morphoagronomic characterization, descriptors, parental selection ResumoO feijão-fava é uma alternativa de renda para a população rural do Nordeste do Brasil, que consome seus grãos verdes ou maduros. Nessa região, todo germoplasma utilizado pelos agricultores é originário de seus próprios cultivos havendo intercâmbio de sementes entre comunidades rurais. O conhecimento sobre a diversidade genética tem proporcionado importantes contribuições no gerenciamento de bancos de germoplasmas e na conservação de recursos genéticos. Neste trabalho, objetivou-se estimar a diversidade genética entre vinte quatro acessos de feijão-fava do Banco Ativo de Germoplasma (BAG) da Universidade Federal do Piauí (UFPI), com base em descritores morfoagronômicos. O experimento foi conduzido em condições de campo, em látice com quatro repetições e dez plantas por parcela, no período de fevereiro a agosto de 2009, sendo utilizados sete descritores qualitativos e seis quantitativos. Para os caracteres quantitativos foram formados quatro grupos pelos métodos de Tocher e UPGMA, enquanto que para os qualitativos formaram-se três grupos pelo método de Tocher e seis pelo UPGMA. O caráter que mais contribuiu para divergência genética (35,23%) foi largura da vagem. UFPI-220 produziu grande número de vagens por planta, característica importante na identificação de acessos potencialmente produtivos. Há expectativa de combinação promissora entre UFPI-220 x UFPI-468, em virtude da maior dissimilaridade observada e do melhor desempenho médio desses acessos.
