ABSTRACT:The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of irrigation system and soil cover on yield of yellow melon in Petrolina / PE. The experiment was carried out in the period from April 09, 2016 to June 8, 2016 and was conducted at the Petrolina campus in the IF Sertão -PE rural area, with a randomized complete block design, 2 x 2 x 3 plot scheme, (One and two lines of drippers per row of plants), and the subsubparcels, three soil cover (black mulching cover), two plots of hybrids (Gladial and 10/00), subplots, two irrigation systems, Cover with mulching grey and without soil cover) and six replicates. Mulching efficiency (MPP) was studied in the soil cover and irrigation system located with drippers for the production of yellow hybrid melon 10/00 and Gladial under field conditions. It was verified the statistical influence of the soil cover on melon productivity.

2RESUMO -Realizou-se um experimento para avaliar o crescimento e partição de assimilados de plantas de tomate cultivadas sob cobertura ou não do solo com polipropileno preto. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados completos, com parcelas subdivididas e quatro repetições. Nas parcelas, os tratamentos se constituíram de dois sistemas de cultivo (com e sem cobertura do solo polipropileno preto, TNT) e nas subparcelas, as épocas de amostragem das plantas: 14; 28; 42; 56; 70; 84; 98 e 112 dias após o transplantio, DAT. Foram avaliados: acúmulo de massa seca nas folhas (MSF), ramos (MSR), inflorescências (MSI), frutos (MSFR) e total (MST), área foliar (AF), razão de área foliar (RAF), taxa assimilatória líquida (TAL), taxa de crescimento absoluto (TCA) e taxa de crescimento relativo (TCR ABSTRACT -An experiment was carried out to evaluate the growth and division of treated tomato plants grown in soil covered or not with black polypropylene. The experimental design was of randomised complete blocks, in split plots and four replications. In the plots, the treatments consisted of two systems (with and without a black polypropylene TNT covering) and in the subplots, plant-sampling times of 14, 28, 42, 56, 70, 84, 98 and 112 days after transplanting (DAT). The following were evaluated: dry matter accumulation in the leaves (DML), the branches (DMB), the inflorescences (DMI), the fruits (DMFR) total dry mass (TDM), the leaf area (LA), leaf area ratio (LAR), net assimilation rate (NAR), absolute growth rate (AGR) and relative growth rate (RGR). The ground cover did not influence the DML, DMB, DMI DMFR or TDM as well as LA, LAR, NAR, AGR or RGR. The fruits behaved as preferential drain for the plant, reaching the end of the cycle with 47.77% of the total dry mass accumulation. respectively, while the RGR and NAR decreased throughout the evaluation period.

The mulching technique has assumed an important role in land cover (MONTEIRO et al, 2008a;MONTEIRO et al, 2008b;MEDEIROS et al, 2006, MEDEIROS et al, 2005, but the actual water use by crops should be observed under these conditions and the soil-waterplant processes involved, soil water distribution and wet bulb conformation, which justify the use of such techniques. This information is of great importance to both, design projects and irrigation management, for example, to define the number and spacing of emitters, their location relative to plants or plant rows and to define the different areas of water and nutrients.…”

Mulching has become an important technique for land cover, but there are some technical procedures which should be adjusted for these new modified conditions to establish optimum total water depth. It is also important to observe the soil-water relations as soil water distribution and wetted volume dimensions. The objective of the present study was to estimate melon evapotranspiration under mulching in a protected environment and to verify the water spatial distribution around the melon root system in two soil classes. Mulching provided 27 mm water saving by reducing water evaporation. In terms of volume each plant received, on average, the amount of 175.2 L of water in 84 days of cultivation without mulching, while when was used mulching the water requirement was 160.2 L per plant. The use of mulching reduced the soil moisture variability throughout the crop cycle and allowed a greater distribution of soil water that was more intense in the clay soil. The clayey soil provided on average 43 mm more water depth retention in 0.50 m soil deep relative to the sandy loam soil, and reduced 5.6 mm the crop cycle soil moisture variation compared to sandy loam soil.
