“…This is supported by results of this study and other research on the status of regional habitats and their biodiversity [23] [27] [33] [34] [56]. Areas of Permanent Preservation (APP) and Legal Reserves (RL) form one of the main mechanisms for the protection of biodiversity in Brazil [70]. Those present in the Miranda basin require intensive supervision so that the representativeness of the remaining vegetation of the Brazilian biomes also is guaranteed on private property.…”

“…This is all the more so because, in general, the precarious nature of the environmental bodies' institutional structure is a serious problem when it comes to managing native vegetation, and managing and inspecting rural properties in the country. This makes it more difficult to effectively comply with the law so these areas can perform their functions satisfactorily (BACHA, 2005;BERNARDO, 2010;MARQUES;VIANA et al, 2002). The environmental bodies still have little experience and knowledge of the possibility of applying and using AFS in legal reserves (RAMOS FILHO, 2007).…”

“…Among these legal obligations, the Forest Code demands the maintenance of Permanent Protection Areas (i.e. APPs) and a Legal Reserve, which represent "obligatory modalities of protected natural areas" (BRASIL, 2012a;SILVA;RANIERI, 2014, p. 116;MARQUES;RANIERI, 2012). Despite the importance of these instruments for the protection and restoration of essential ecological processes, various scientific studies observe a large quantity of Legal Reserve deficits on private properties (SOARES-FILHO et al, 2014a;SPAROVEK et al, 2012;STICKLER et al, 2013).…”
