Antifungal activity of the lemongrass oil and citral against Candida spp.

Abstract: Superficial mycoses of the skin are among the most common dermatological infections, and causative organisms include dermatophytic, yeasts, and non-dermatophytic filamentous fungi. The treatment is limited, for many reasons, and new drugs are necessary. Numerous essential oils have been tested for both in vitro and in vivo antifungal activity and some pose much potential as antifungal agents. By using disk diffusion assay, we evaluated the antifungal activity of lemongrass oil and citral against yeasts of Cand… Show more

“…The antimicrobial activity of lemongrass oil is due to the presence of a citral compound. [33] This is also supported by our findings, as mountain pepper oil showed antimicrobial activity (ZOI: 19.2 § 1.2 mm) and its major constituent is citral compound. Thyme oil, which is rich in thymol, also has strong effects against some pathogens.…”

“…The present study showed a dose-dependent relationship between the tested fungi and the essential oil concentrations as similarly reported in literature (Mishra et al, 2015;Silva et al, 2008). The GC-MS analysis showed the presence of linalool (0.21%), citronellal (45.09%) and citronellol (19.11%) as the main contributors toward the broad antifungal activities (Chand et al, 2016;Lee et al, 2008;Olorunnisola et al, 2014;Pauli and Knobloch, 1987).…”

“…It has been reported that the citral and the essential oil of Cymbopogon citratus, shows antifungal activity against C. glabrata, C. krusei, C. parapsilosis, C. tropicalis and especially C. albicans (Silva Cde et al, 2008). Lemongrass oil is characterized for monoterpenes compounds, and citral is the major component present at levels of approximately, 65-85% (Ferreira & Fonteles, 1989).…”
