Role of the Parasight-F test in the diagnosis of complicated Plasmodium falciparum malarial infection

Abstract: An evaluation was made of the diagnostic efficacy and utility of the Parasight-F test in diagnosing Plasmodium falciparum malaria, compared with conventional microscopy, particularly in severe and complicated cases. This study was designed as a prospective, case control hospital-based study. Febrile patients suspected to be suffering from malaria were selected randomly and were subjected to peripheral smear examinations (thick and thin) and Parasight-F tests till the required number of at least 30 cases of P. … Show more

“…The accuracy of the test was 89% and I-index 0.77 in comparison with gold standard. The above results are comparable to other studies 11,12 Out of 262 microscopy positive children, 21 were found to be negative on RDT and the possible reason for this false negativity may be occasional failure of rapid test to detect high parasite densities as recorded earlier. [10][11][12] Pf HRP-2 deleted mutants have been reported but their prevalence is not known.…”

“…Other studies also reported high sensitivity ranges from 100% to 96% [7,8]. Which is higher than the threshold of 95% recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) some other studies reported from 89% to 100% [9][10][11]? The specificity in these studies range from 80% to 100%.…”

“…The performance of different diagnostic techniques depends on the malaria species, the parasite density, previous treatment, gametocytaemia and the quality of the diagnostic method [20]. Test sensitivity and specificity, as traditionally defined, are thus purely theoretical concepts, not necessarily established in the conditions where the test is actually used.…”
