“…This fi nding corroborates the results of a case-control study conducted in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil, from 2001 to 2008, which found a greater incidence of the disease among black and brown-skinned mothers (odds ratio [OR]: 2.1; 95% CI: 1.5-2.8) compared with all other ethnicities 16 . Despite the global initiative to eradicate congenital syphilis launched by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2007, the situation showed little change fi ve years later; thus, the results of some studies suggest that ethnicity is not necessarily associated with the incidence of disease, which instead appears to be associated with socio-demographic factors.…”

“…In Brazil, transmission rates remain very high and it seems unlikely to achieve the goal of global elimination of the disease (4) . In our study, it was identified an incidence rate (39.4‰) much higher than the target set to us and higher than in other national studies (13)(14)(15)(16)(17)(18)(19)(20) with the same CS criteria (21) . It is worth noting that there were diverse methodology studies, with primary data, as well as data from SI-NAN, population and hospitals.…”
