INTRODUCTION: Many people suffering from mental disorders fail to adequately perform self-care, especially in relation to personal hygiene and in particular to oral hygiene. For these individuals, the prevention and ongoing clinical monitoring are essential. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the oral diseases that most affect patients with mental disorders attended in the Dental College of the Federal University of Piauí (UFPI). METHODOLOGY: Patients treated during the 2nd half of 2011 and 1st half of 2012 were examined. The DMFT index was used for evaluation of dental caries and the CPI index for periodontal evaluation. The statistical analyzes were performed with SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences), version 18.0, using a descriptive statistics to determine averages, standard deviations and frequencies. RESULT: 67.50% of the 40 patients had contact with the surgeon dentist for over one year, 95% performed their own oral hygiene and 70% did not use dental floss. The average of DMFT was 14.18. Of the patients, 49.13% needed of restorations of one surface and 60% needed dental prosthesis. Moreover, 33.75% of sextants evaluated had periodontal pockets. CONCLUSION: It can be noticed that patients with mental illness have a high risk of developing oral disorders, however, few carriers visite a dental professional regularly. In addition, the delay to seek treatment and lack of staff training, lead to solutions often crippling.

Introduction In Brazil, dental trauma (DT) is considered a public health problem. However, few studies in the literature report the prevalence of DT in disabled persons (DP). Objective The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of DT among DP seen at the Dental Clinic for Special-Needs Patients (COPE) of the Catholic University of Brasília. Material and method A retrospective, descriptive study analyzing 73 medical charts of DP seen at the COPE between 2014 and 2016 was conducted. Clinical and sociodemographic data were collected. The t-test was used to check for significant differences between the categories of the variables analyzed. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), version 23.0 (IBM Corporation, Armonk, NY, USA) was used for all statistical analyses (p < 0.05). Result A DT prevalence of 33/73 (45.2%) was found among DP. The predominant type of fracture was crown fracture (26/33-78.8%). The majority of patients were over 20 years old (63/73 - 86.3%), at a proportion significantly higher than those for the other age categories (p < 0.008). The patients in the sample had a variety of diseases, predominantly in the following categories: mental (22/73- 30.1%), multiple (19/73-26%), and systemic (14/73-19.2%). Conclusion A high prevalence of DT was found in DP, with the majority of cases being related to mental and multiple diseases. Further research is needed to assess the prevalence of DT in this patient group throughout the Federal District.

O Centro de Especialidades Odontológicas (CEO) configura uma das estratégias da Política Nacional de Saúde Bucal. Dentre as especialidades atendidas, oferece tratamento aos portadores de necessidades especiais, assegurando-os o pleno exercício de seus direitos à saúde. Este estudo objetivou descrever o perfil epidemiológico da clientela atendida no CEO de Feira de Santana. Foram analisados os prontuários de 361 pacientes portadores de necessidades especiais atendidos no CEO de Feira de Santana no período de agosto de 2006 a dezembro de 2008. Os dados coletados foram dispostos no Statistical Package for the Social Sciences versão 17.0, para análise descritiva. Destes, 185 (52,2 %) eram homens e 176 (47,8 %), mulheres, sendo a deficiência mental a condição mais prevalente com 106 pacientes (29,3 %). O planejamento odontológico foi concluído em 126 (35%) desses pacientes. O reconhecimento dos fatores associados à manifestação clínica das afecções bucais mais prevalentes estabelece subsídios para ações específicas ao público-alvo, sedimentando a promoção de saúde bucal aos pacientes especiais.
