Red Araza, or Red Strawberry Guava (Psidium cattleianum Sabine) is a native Brazilian Atlantic Forest species of the Myrtaceae family, whose seeds exhibit integumental dormancy. Due to its importance to different industries worldwide, recent research efforts are seeking to expand this species' micropropagation processes using in vitro seedling germination, especially since in vitro micropropagation of adult plant material has, so far, been limited. This research effort evaluated different methods of overcoming integumental dormancy during in vitro germination of the Red Araza, so as to allow future micropropagation of the species. The seeds' emergence and vigor were evaluated based on mechanical and acid scarification, using different substrates and immersions in solutions with different levels of gibberellic acid (GA 3 ), and on the influence of the pre-immersion of seeds in water and sulfuric acid. The mechanical and acid scarification of the seeds, combined or separate, resulted in higher in vitro germination percentages and a higher germination rate index (GRI). Pre-immersion in distilled water (20 hours) also proved to be efficient for the germination of the Red Araza seed, with 76.2% of the seeds germinating and a higher speed of emergence (GRI = 0.18). When compared to a Murashige and Skoog (MS-zero) medium, sowing in a hydrophilic cotton substrate showed greater emergence and vigor, with approximately 70% of the seeds germinating. Treating the seeds by pre-immersing them in GA 3 turned out to be unnecessary. The methods used for overcoming integumental dormancy during in vitro germination of Red Araza seeds proved to be efficient, and could be used to develop micropropagation protocols of seminal origin for this species.

Residues from agricultural activities might be used as substrates for production of seedlings. In this study it was aimed to evaluate the physiology, nutrition and quality of Eugenia dysenterica DC. seedlings grown in substrates derived from agricultural organic wastes. The wastes used were as follows: rice husks (RHs); fermented cattle manure (FCM); cattle manure compost (CMC), which contained corn silage and FCM; sugarcane bagasse (SCB); filter cake from sugar-alcohol mills (FC); and subsoil (SB). Four substrates were formulated from the wastes, namely SB+RH (1:1; v:v), SB+CMC (1:1), SB+FCM (3:1) and SCB+FC (3:2) and Bioplant  substrate was also used. The following characteristics were evaluated: the emergence and vigor percentages, biometric characteristics, seedling quality indices, gas exchange, chlorophyll a fluorescence and leaf nutrient levels. The seedling emergence was similar for all the substrates. The highest vigor was found in seedlings that were cultivated in SCB+FC, which was equal to the vigor observed in Bioplant  . In general, the use of the SB+CMC substrate gave better seedling results for the biometric and nutritional characteristics, followed by SCB+FC. Most of the biometric characteristics showed a correlation with photosynthesis, electron transport rate and effective quantum yield of photosystem II, thus showing that these characteristics can be alternatives to the traditional quality indexes used for seedlings. The use of CMC, SCB and FC was shown to be appropriate for the production and nutritional supply of seedlings' specie. The composition SB (subsoil)+CMC (1:1) proved to be the most suitable to produce E. dysenterica seedlings.

The present study aimed to determine the imbibition curve and evaluate the effects of 'reducing the water content of cagaita seeds (Eugenia dysenterica DC.), using the radiographic image analysis technique. To this end, three assays were carried out: seed imbibition curve and root protrusion were determined in assay 1. Seeds in silica gel were oven dried for to 72 h and were then analyzed for water content and vigor in assay 2. Seeds were dried up to certain levels of the water content and were evaluated by radiographic imaging analysis in assay 3. A rapid mass gain was observed in the first 60 imbibition hours and the root protrusion reached 94.4% after 192 imbibition hours. Cagaita seeds did not tolerate drying periods longer than 24 h, which corroborates the recalcitrant behavior of the seeds of these species. The analysis of the radiographic image obtained by an X-ray test allowed the establishment of a direct relation between the increased free space area within the seed and the decrease in the seedling emergence. The drying process altered the internal morphology of the seed and such changes directly influenced the development of the seedlings. Key words: Native fruit. Myrtaceae. Drying. Recalcitrant. ResumoObjetivou-se com este trabalho determinar as relações entre níveis de absorção de água e a germinação, bem como, avaliar os efeitos da redução do teor de água no vigor de sementes de cagaita (Eugenia dysenterica DC.). Para tanto, foram realizados três ensaios: No ensaio 1 determinou-se a curva de embebição e germinação das sementes. No ensaio 2 as sementes foram submetidas a secagem em estufa e em sílica gel por até 72 horas e submetidas a avaliações do teor de água e do vigor. No ensaio 3 as sementes foram submetidas a secagem até determinados teores de água e avaliadas por meio da análise de imagens radiográficas. Houve um rápido ganho de massa nas primeiras 60 horas de embebição, com protrusão radicular chegando a 94,4% após 192 horas de embebição. As sementes de cagaita não toleraram secagem por períodos superiores a 24 horas, reafirmando o comportamento recalcitrante das sementes da espécie. A partir da análise de imagens radiográficas, obtidas pelo teste de Raios X, foi possível estabelecer relação direta entre o aumento da área de espaço livre no interior da semente, e a diminuição da emergência de plântulas.
