ABStRACt. The present study examined the importance of mean (m+a' and d) components in the performance of single-cross hybrids for the formation of new populations and determined the contribution of the mixed model (best linear unbiased predictor of random effects, BLUP) method associated with molecular markers for the choice of crosses to obtain interpopulation hybrids. Ten single-cross commercial hybrids of different companies were used for this purpose, producing all possible doublecross hybrids through a complete diallel. The hybrids were evaluated in 15 locations in the agricultural year 2005/2006, using randomized complete block design with three repetitions. In three of these locations, estimates of m+a' and d were obtained. DNA was extracted from the single-cross hybrids and 20 SSR primers were used, nine of which were linked to QTL for yield. There was no correlation between m+a' of the single-cross hybrids with general combining ability (r = -0.15) inferring that populations with lines with high means do not always produce good hybrids. Also, it was observed that the correlation between the genetic distances with specific combining ability varied from 0.31 to 0.80 in the inter-group hybrids, while in the intra-group hybrids these estimates were low and non-significant. The heritability value obtained by BLUP Potential of maize single-cross hybrids for extraction of inbred lines was high and greater than that obtained by ordinary least squares (h 2 = 0.95 and 0.86), confirming the greater selection accuracy by the BLUP method. There were no differences between the accuracy values obtained with microsatellite information and without this information, inferring that there was no advantage of progenitor information on balanced data. It can be concluded that the estimate m+a' should not be used as a deciding parameter about the potential for extracting lines from a given population. The heritability and accuracy values obtained by BLUP allow the inference that it is possible to predict success in the choice of progenitors to obtain interpopulation hybrids.

In breeding programs, obtaining breeding lines was important, and first selfing selection generations is common. In addition, an analytic approach through mixed models can lead to more success in genotype selection because it lends flexibility in analysis of unbalanced data and provides more precise genotypic values in regard to progenies evaluated. The goal of this study was to make early selection (in the S 2 generation) of progenies evaluated in top crosses, using a mixed-model approach. Five hundred S 2 progenies were plant derived from three populations using selection intensity (40%), which were crossbreeding with three testers. The hybrids obtained, together with control treatments, were set up in five experiments in Brazil: three in Minas Gerais, one in Santa Catarina, and one in Paraná, which evaluated grain yield. The REML method was used for calculation of variance components, and means were predicted through BLUP. The BLUPs of general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) were also predicted, and the Spearman correlation coefficients among BLUPs were estimated. The dominance effects had a bigger influence on yield expression, as seen from wider amplitude in SCA values. There was an 86% coincidence considering strategy in which selection index was carried out within three populations, in relation to selection by the overall value of GCA. Considering superior hybrids, the progenies of population C exceeded the quantity of hybrids expected by 24.6%, whereas there was a reduction of 30.8% for A and 20% for B. The hybrids that exhibited the highest BLUP means were derived from crosses between progenies of population C together with the tester LE84. The low correlation among testers, both for SCA and for BLUPs, indicates that there is progeny per tester interaction.

Capacidade combinatória de linhagens de milho avaliada por meio de testadores adaptados à safrinha

RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho foi estimar a capacidade de combinação de 47 linhagens de milho desenvolvidas pela Universidade Estadual de Maringá, no sentido de identificar as linhagens mais promissoras para utilização em programas de melhoramento voltados para safrinha. Para isso, as linhagens foram cruzadas em topcrosses com dois híbridos comerciais adaptados à safrinha (P30K75 e AG9010), utilizados como testadores de base genética estreita. Os topcrosses foram avaliados em experimentos delineados em blocos completos ao acaso, com duas repetições, e alocados em quatro locais representativos para a safrinha, nos estados do Paraná, São Paulo e Mato Grosso do Sul. Adicionalmente, as linhagens per se foram avaliadas em um experimento em Floresta, PR. Foram avaliados os caracteres: (i) rendimento de grãos, em kg ha-1; (ii) florescimento feminino e masculino; (iii) tolerância ao estresse hídrico. Para as linhagens per se, os quadrados médios foram significativos (p < 0,05) para rendimento de grãos e florescimento. As capacidades gerais para testadores e linhagens e, específica de combinação entre linhagens e testadores, foram significativas (p < 0,05) para todas as características avaliadas. A linhagem 21 destacou-se pela alta capacidade geral de combinação () para rendimento de grãos, nos quatro ambientes. Nas linhagens 4, 37, 38, 39 e 47 constataram-serelevantes para rendimento de grãos, em dois ambientes, inclusive sob condições de estresse hídrico, e para florescimento. As combinações AG9010 x linhagem 37 e P30K75 x linhagem 18 tiveram destaque e as linhagens 18 e 37 foram indicadas como testadoras de novas linhagens oriundas dos testadores.
