Recyclable materials collectors represent the possibility of social reinsertion based on what is discarded by the society. At the same time, this path is not built without mishaps or challenges. ACIMAR -Association of Recyclable Materials Collectors of Itajubá was founded in 2007, from the organization of workers/collectors which used to collect recyclables at the streets of Itajubá, southern Minas Gerais state, and its 'lixao' (place where trash is thrown away without any caution). Nowadays, the association is made up of about 30 members. The main goal of this work is to assess how the evolution of recyclable materials and the respective income generated from it, has influenced the sustainability of ACIMAR. Data used in this work were stored in the association's cashbook, with the respectives invoices and financial records. As a general rule, it can be stated that these data underestimate the recyclable materials records, and the associated income, as in many cases there were situations in which sales were carried out, loans were withdrawn, acquisition of food for the group's meals, among others, without the adequate financial register. ACIMAR contribution towards recyclable materials processing in Itajubá is still modest, being 6% of the maximum recyclable waste, in a situation where all the processed material would come from domestic origin. The total amount of recyclable materials has presented a negative trend of about 220 kg/month between August 2009 and February 2013, especially due to the poor performance from August 2012 onwards. Paper and paperboard are the most common recyclable materials processed by ACIMAR. Thus, their market prices are strategic for the sustainability of the association, in a way that negotiations on these materials should be taken with criteria and ideally inclue different buyers, where best selling conditions must be prioritized. A change in the profile of materials processed by the association is taking place, with the majority of the materials being collected directly on streets, based on household and commerce origins and a positive trend of 200 kg/month, rather than coming from institutional donations, such as those coming from industries. The distinction between autonomy or dependence of ACIMAR in the future is directly related to how its associates deal and rank the importance of an effective and transparent financial control, performed by the own group.
