Occurrence of doliolids and salps during 1958, 1959, and 1960 off the São Paulo coast

Abstract: SYNOPSISPlankton samples were collected fortnightly off São Paulo coast during 1958, 1959 and 1960. The following Thaliacians were recorded Doriolum nationalis, Dolioletta gegenbauri and Thalia democratica. Morphological and ecological aspects of each species were studied. Doliolids seemed to be endemic in the region, occurring throughout the whole period of survey. The salps occurred only occasionally in dense swarms suggesting that this species is carried in to the region by offshore waters.

“…It is also worth to mention that the processes determining the occurrence and spatial distribution of salps and other thaliaceans are barely known, even if Tavares (1967), Bonecker (1983 and Katsuragawa et al (1993) have provided important preliminary results. The negative influence of salp aggregations on non-gelatinous plankton, as suggested in those works, may be related to the direct competition for algal food or to production of toxic substances by salps (Folt and Goldman 1981), but such cause-effect relationship has not been established in Brazilian waters so far.…”

“…Station I oH Cananéia nearest to the coast showed a slight reduction in number of species and the occurrence of species from the genus FritilIaria was sporadic. Certain influences of the waters of the lagunar region of Cananéia may probably occur at this station (TAVARES, 1967). The three stations situated oH Santos, showed no diHerence in specific composition of its Appendicularia fauna.…”

“…The organisms of each subsample were identified (mainly following Esnal, 1999;Esnal & Daponte, 1999a, 1999b and counted. The type of zooid was identified by differentiating oozoids (asexual solitary zooids) and blastozooids (hermaphrodite aggregated zooids) based on the number and arrangement of the body muscle bands, the position and form of the digestive tract and the shape of the tunic (Tavares, 1967). For Doliolidade, only unidentified rigid transparent tunics were recorded.…”
