Characterization of avian eggshell waste aiming its use in a ceramic wall tile paste

Abstract: In Brazil, the food industry generates every year huge amounts of avian eggshell waste, and a critical question is to find an adequate use for this waste. The aim of this work is to determine the chemical, mineralogical and physical characteristics of a nonprocessed avian eggshell waste sample, as well as to investigate its use in wall tile paste. The sample was analyzed regarding to chemical composition, X-ray diffraction, morphology, particle size analysis, density, organic matter, soluble salts, and thermal… Show more

“…The high value of lost on ignition (LOI) is typical of chicken eggshells since the calcination of CaCO 3 produces CaO and CO 2 (g). Freire and Holanda [8] reported similar results for avian eggshells. The organic matter present in the eggshell also contributed to LOI in a much lesser proportion than CaCO 3 .…”

“…The calcined eggshell can be used as a catalyst for the production of biodiesel [7], raw material for ceramic products [8], adsorbent for removing carbon dioxide generated during the production of hydrogen, fertilizer, and source of calcium in nutritional supplements for animal and pet food.…”

“…Ceramic wall tiles are primarily composed of quartz, clays and different carbonates. The potential use of eggshells as ceramic raw material for tiles and sanitary sectors have also been reported earlier [12]. Another significant application of eggshells are as mineral fillers in thermoplastic materials like high density polyethylene (HDPE).…”

“…Instead, researchers focused mainly on the changes in hydration of the whole chicken egg during incubation (Holub et al 1994). Furthermore, literature data on the moisture content of the CE are not consistent (Freire & Holanda, 2006;Sugino et al, 1997), which suggest that this topic should be further studied. The deconvolution of the spectra revealed that three signals can be detected at 7.2, 4.8 and 1.2 ppm in all of the studied samples.…”
