Abstract: Skin pigmentation is an important human phenotypic trait whose regulation, in spite of recent advances, has not yet been fully understood. The pigment melanin is produced in melanosomes by melanocytes in a complex process called melanogenesis. The melanocyte interacts with endocrine, immune, inflammatory and central nervous systems, and its activity is also regulated by extrinsic factors such as ultraviolet radiation and drugs. We have carried out a review of the current understanding of intrinsic and extrinsi… Show more

“…Melanocytes are located in basal layer of hair follicles and skin epidermis [22]. Kit and SCF genes are involved in melanoblast proliferation and skin macules, which mutation can occur to melanoblast development migration (piebaldism) [8].…”

“…Melanin, the end product of melanogenesis, determines the color of human skin, hair, and eyes and is synthesized within unique organelles of melanocytes called melanosomes [1,2] . Although melanin mainly plays a photoprotective role in absorbing free radicals from the cytoplasm and shielding from UV light, the overproduction…”

“…Melanin synthesis is a complex process and requires numerous factors, including tyrosinase, autocrine and paracrine cytokines, tyrosinaserelated protein (TRP)-1, TRP-2, and other enzymes for melanin transportation and decomposition (Videira et al, 2013). However, the precise inhibitory mechanism underlying the effect of traditional herbs is not yet completely understood.…”
