Introduction Gender inequality occurs in all spheres of society, which is no different in the medical field. Abstract presentations in congress are the vanguard of scientific knowledge, an integral part of topic discussion, and, ideally, culminate in the publication of these works as complete manuscripts. Objective The objective of this study is to evaluate the role played by women in the presentation of scientific works at the Brazilian Society of Coloproctology congress and in the works published from these presentations. Methods The bibliometric evaluation of the presented abstracts in the editions from 2015 to 2018 of the Brazilian Congress of Coloproctology was used, along with the works later published from these presentations. Gender identification data was extracted from the authors of the abstracts through their names and research for conference on the Lattes and Google Scholar platforms. The collected data was on the number of female participants and their order of authorship of abstracts and publications, evaluating possible changes when publication occurs. Results A total of 1,336 abstracts were analyzed, with 91.6% of female authors. When publication occurs, women's presence dropped to 75.2% and suffered a change of order in the position of authorship to one of lesser relevance in 38.1%. Conclusion Women's participation occurs in most abstracts. However, this proportion undergoes unfavorable changes when these works are published, either by changing the order of authorship, when women leave main positions and become coauthors, or are removed from the complete manuscript's publication.

Este artigo expõe os resultados de uma pesquisa que foi norteada pela seguinte questão: qual a representação das mulheres na autoria e corpo editorial de periódicos científicos brasileiros da área cirúrgica nos últimos cinco anos? Os objetivos da pesquisa foram os de identificar e analisar a produção científica brasileira em cirurgia através de artigos científicos publicados no período de 2010 a 2014 em quatro periódicos: Acta Cirúrgica Brasileira (ACB), Arquivos Brasileiros de Cirurgia Digestiva (ABCD), Revista Brasileira de Cirurgia Cardiovascular (RBCCV) e Revista do Colégio Brasileiro de Cirurgiões (RCBC). A análise bibliométrica foi a abordagem metodológica adotada e os resultados obtidos apontaram que 920 artigos foram escritos por 5.649 autores. Os homens aparecem como autores em 63,5% (n= 585) dos artigos, enquanto que as mulheres comparecem como autoras em 23,8% (n=219) do total de artigos. Ao investigar o gênero da autoria nos artigos originais e de revisão, os resultados mostraram que a participação feminina é inferior à masculina em ambos os tipos, e em todos os quatro periódicos. Em relação à participação das mulheres nos corpos editoriais dos periódicos, os resultados revelaram que apenas no periódico ABCD a presença feminina é única e exclusiva, enquanto que no periódico RCBC essa situação se inverte; isto é, não há mulheres no corpo editorial. O estudo realizado demonstrou que persistem as assimetrias de gênero em termos das autorias, coautorias, tipos de artigos (originais e de revisão), e também no corpo editorial, comitê científico e corpo de revisores.

Analysis of Scientific Publications from Turkey in Dermatology: Social Network Analysis, Text Mining, and Clustering

Objective: To perform network analysis of publications from Turkey under the Dermatology category of the Web of Science (WoS) between 1998 and 2017. Material and Methods: We selected all SCI-E journals listed in the WoS under the "Dermatology" category. For descriptive analyses, Clarivate Analytics of WoS was used. VOSviewer was used for text mining, co-word clustering, and visualizing the obtained results. Results: A total of 3319 articles from Turkey were published over the span of 20 years. There is an increasing trend of publications under the "Dermatology" category until 2006, after which point the number seems to stabilize. Between 2002 and 2017, the average percentage of articles from Turkey is around 3.5% in the Dermatology category of WoS. Five large medical institutions such as Istanbul University, Gülhane Military Medical Academy, Hacettepe University, Ankara University, and Ankara Numune Hospital produced 30% of the dermatology articles from Turkey. The average number of citations per article is 9.5. The number of citations shows an increasing trend, reaching almost 3,500 in 2017. We obtained five clusters by co-authorship analysis. Generally, we have seen that geographic distance is an important factor for collaboration of institutions. Via text mining, 43,030 terms were obtained. After processing, the most important 64 terms were collected under five clusters. Conclusion: The dermatology research output of Turkey is increasing, although it has slowed in the last decade. An important fraction of these publications originate from older institutions in Istanbul and Ankara. The publications from Turkey are both qualitatively and quantitatively concentrated on psoriasis and Behçet's disease.
