Abstract: Atypical nevum (dysplastic) is considered an important factor associated with increased risk of developing cutaneous melanoma. It is believed that atypical nevi are precursor lesions of cutaneous melanoma. They may be present in patients with multiple melanocytic nevi (atypical nevus syndrome) or isolated and in small numbers in a non-familial context. The disease usually begins at puberty and predominates in young people. It has a predilection for sun-exposed areas, especially the trunk. The major challenge i… Show more

“…Melanocytic nevus is known to be the one of the most important etiologic factors in the development of melanoma. Having atypical nevi or having lots of melanocytic nevi are two examples of these risk factors [7,17]. For this reason; clinical studies with large volunters' participation is important.…”

“…Despite several studies are on the opposite view, the majority of randomized clinical trials supports the association between large numbers of nevi and increased risk for the development of melanoma and greater genetic tendency to form melanoma [2,6]. The number of common and atypical nevi is defined as an important independent risk factor to the development of melanoma [7]. The most prominent known phenotypic risk factor for the development of melanoma is a large number of common melanocytic nevi [5].…”

“…9-11 It is believed that atypical nevi are precursor lesions of cutaneous melanoma. 12 According to Elder et al, 1980, melanomas can occur associated with pre-existing atypical nevi, and there was clinical evidence of this finding in at least 2 / 3 of patients, and remaining nevi in at least 50% of the primary lesions. 13 …”

“…Melanomas can arise from melanocytic nevi but much more often on intact skin. Multiple dysplastic or atypical MN are considered to be an important factor associated with increased risk of melanoma [1,2] . It is believed that atypical nevi are precursor lesions for cutaneous melanoma.…”
