The zingiberene is a sesquiterpene that is present in tomato leaves. This compound is known to promote resistance to pests and diseases. The Brazil has a germplasm bank of vegetable at Universidade Federal de Viçosa (HGB-UFV) crops with over 8 million accesses. One technique that helps in the choice of progenitors with favorable concentrations of zingiberene is the diallel crosses. The diallel crosses allow the estimation of general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA). Thus, the aim of this study was to find out tomato hybrids with high zingiberene concentrations. The genitors were divided into two contrasting groups for resistance to pests. The characterization and quantification spectrophotometric of zingiberene was performed, obtaining absorbance values at 270 nm. To determine the content of zingiberene in hybrids those were coming from the diallel cross. The analysis from the spectrophotometric method was performed. The estimates of GCA and SCA of these hybrids at combinations HGB 2119 x LA716, HGB 2119 x PI 12786, HGB 2214 x HGB 674, HGB 2064 x HGB 674, HGB 2214 x PI 127826, HGB 985 x LA 716 and Santa Clara x HGB 674 have high potential in tomato plant breeding aiming of resistance to pests and diseases.

We report the first record of Neochrysocharis formosa (Westwood) parasitizing larvae of the tomato moth, Tuta absoluta (Meyrick), in tomato crops in Northern Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. Tomato moth larvae were sampled during four consecutive growing cycles, between 2003 and 2005, in 10 sites. Neochrysocharis formosa was present only in organic outdoor and protected crops, and predominantly during the late season. Parasitism rates varied from 1.5% to 5%. The finding of this species is a new record for Argentina and South America, and T. absoluta is a new host record.

The tomato leaf miner (TLM), Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), is one of the major pests that attacks commercial tomato. TLM is becoming resistant to many of the pesticides used in the tomato fields. A potential alternative method of control is host plant resistance, which may be mediated by glandular trichomes. We studied glandular and non-glandular trichomes potentially related to tomato resistance of nine tomato genotypes (Lycopersicon hirsutum Humb & Bonpl), extensively cultivated in western Iran. The antixenosis and/or antibiosis effect of the genotypes Mobil, Falat 3, Cal J N3, Dehghan, Super Strain B, Río Grande, King Ston, Early Urbana and Peto Mech were evaluated under greenhouse conditions (25 ± 1°C, 65 ± 5% R.H., photoperiod of L16: D8 h). TLM elicited the lowest egg-laying response on Peto Mech, Río Grande and King Ston; and the highest one on Dehghan. King Ston and Mobil allowed the lowest and highest larvae density on the leaves, respectively. The highest preference was observed on Mobil and the lowest one on Río Grande and King Ston. Moreover, trichome type and density of the assayed genotypes appeared to be related to TLM population density: the most infested genotype (Mobil and Cal J N3) displayed the lowest IV and VI trichome style ranks of leaf blade, vein and domatia (glandular trichomes). Significant negative relations were found between egg and larvae density with leaf I style trichome; and also larvae and adult density with IV and V style trichome. Finally, this preliminary study screened two genotypes (Río Grande and King Ston) quite promising for developing resistance programs in western Iran against TLM.
