ABSTRACT. An understanding of the interaction between spittlebugs and forage grasses is essential for establishing factors that favor productive pastures. In the present study, we evaluated the protein profiles of the spittle of Mahanarva spectabilis (Distant, 1909) (Hemiptera: Cercopidae) fed various elephant grass genotypes. Each plant was infested with a single fifth-instar M. spectabilis. After 24 h, samples of the spittle produced by each nymph were collected and stored at -20°C, after which their protein profiles were analyzed. The exclusivity or interactions of the proteins present in the spittle produced by the insects revealed the susceptibility of the tested genotypes. The results indicate that groups of genotypes show identical spittle protein profiles when subjected to attack by spittlebugs. Resistant and susceptible elephant grass genotypes exhibited high similarity indices within each group. The similarity index was low for the resistance control species (Brachiaria brizantha) compared with that of the tested elephant grass genotypes. Qualitative and quantitative studies of the proteins expressed in the most promising materials will be performed in an ongoing genetic improvement program seeking to develop genotypes resistant to spittlebugs, which are the main biotic pests of elephant grasses.

ResumoAs cigarrinha-das-pastagens são consideradas as mais importantes pragas em pastagens tropicais. Os danos ocasionados por estes insetos diminuem a produção das pastagens. O objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar a flutuação populacional de Notozulia entreriana, no período de junho de 2007 a junho de 2008, e a correlação com os fatores meteorológicos/ambientais (precipitação pluviométrica, temperatura, radiação solar diária e altura da pastagem). Para tanto, amostraram-se três áreas de pastagem no município de Marechal Cândido Rondon-PR. Foram realizadas amostragens de adultos e ninfas. Também se determinaram quais as espécies de cigarrinhas-das-pastagens (Hemiptera: Cercopidae) ocorrem na região oeste do Estado do Paraná. A flutuação populacional de N. entreriana apresentou quatro picos durante o período favorável de desenvolvimento -primavera/verão. A radiação solar diária apresentou maior correlação com a dinâmica populacional. Por outro lado, precipitação pluviométrica, temperatura e altura da pastagem apresentaram pouca correlação com a dinâmica populacional. A espécie que ocorreu com maior abundância foi N. entreriana, representando 88,4% do total de insetos coletados na região oeste do Paraná. The damages caused by these insects decrease the production of pastures. The objective this work was to study the population dynamics of Notozulia entreriana, from June 2007 to June 2008, and the correlation with meteorological and environmental factors (rainfall, temperature, daily solar radiation and pasture height). Therefore, sampled were made in three areas of grassland in the municipality of Marechal Cândido Rondon-PR. Sampling of adults and nymphs was made. Also we determined which species of spittlebugs (Hemiptera: Cercopidae) occur in the western region of Paraná State. The population fluctuation of N. entreriana showed four peaks during the period of favorable development -spring / summer. The daily solar radiation had a higher correlation with the population. Rainfall, temperature and pasture height had little correlation with the population dynamics. The species that occurred with greater abundance was N. entreriana, representing 88.4% of the total insects collected in western of Paraná State.

Collaria oleosa causes leaf injuries to the main forage grasses used for cattle feeding in Brazil. The aim of this work was to determine resistance of B. ruziziensis clones against C. oleosa. Eighty B. ruziziensis clones were maintained in greenhouse, in which C. oleosa natural infestations have been occurring in previous years. After 40 days, damage score and chlorophyll content reduction were assessed for all clones. By using these parameters, genetic gain was estimated based on REML/BLUP mixed models. We observed significant differences for damage scores and chlorophyll content reduction among B. ruziziensis clones, evidencing genetic variability in this forage specie in regard to resistance against C. oleosa. Gain derived from selection of the 10 best clones was 18.2% and 5.80% when considering the damage score and chlorophyll content reduction, respectively. The clones CNPGL BR 10, CNPGL BR 64, CNPGL BR 97 and CNPGL BR 40 presented the highest genetic gain for both damage score and chlorophyll content reduction, and then they will be selected to continue the B. ruziziensis breeding program with the possibility of maximizing genetic gain for the next generations.
