AbstractThis article aims to analyze the ways in which literary criticism in relation to what is considered by the first homosexual novel in Brazil, "Bom-Crioulo" (1895, by Adolfo Caminha), has metamorphosed over the years. In a pathological-biologicalist perspective of the late nineteenth century, the novel was considered by critics as a representation of homosexual and black degeneration, with the figure of the main character of the novel the image of social decadence. However, from the rise of Cultural Studies and the consolidation of minority movements in the second half of the twentieth century, the analyzes begin to understand new biases and interpretations for the novel, which consider the paradoxes of Naturalism of the nineteenth century and understand new voices of empowerment, in the text itself, in relation to the black homosexual.
