Science and Mathematics Education in Brazil: a Systematic Review of 25 Years of Research (1994–2018)

To understand how research in science and mathematics education has developed in Brazil in the last 25 years (from 1994 to 2018) we analyzed the 10 best-rated Brazilian journals in the field. We built an extensive dataset with all articles published in the selected journals about research in science and mathematics education since 1994. We categorized 3014 articles as national production and 584 as foreign and then analyzed the profile of the authors. In the studies from national production, we also analyzed: (i) the nature of the study (empirical research, experience report, or theoretical essay), (ii) research strands and (iii) textual content (titles, abstracts, and keywords). Our results indicated that in the last 25 years, cutting-edge research in science and mathematics education has mainly been led by male researchers from public Universities in the southeast of Brazil. The main thematic strands were teaching and learning and teacher training and the main subjects researched were teacher formation, textbook, and environmental education. In general, foreign articles had only one author from countries in Latin America, Portugal, or Spain. Through the analysis of a considerable amount of publications, our work presented an overview of the scientific production of the field in recent years.

This study aimed to delineate women's participation in recent research conducted by the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fundação Oswaldo Cruz -Fiocruz). The initial data source was the Human Resources Directory (Diretoria de Recursos Humanos -Direh) at Fiocruz, which was used to identify the number of employees with doctorates. The ScriptLattes tool was then used to search for curriculum vitae (CV) that were registered in the Lattes Platform for the period from 1996 to 2013. The results indicate that although women's bibliographic production in absolute numbers is greater than men's, they have an average production performance higher than women's. A second document analysis was performed to map women's participation in decision-making positions at Fiocruz. In general, the data suggest hierarchical (or vertical) segregation, a phenomenon known in the literature as the "glass ceiling", which is characterized by a slower rise in career for women compared to men. This disadvantage results in the underrepresentation of women in positions of decision-making, and women are limited from reaching the most prestigious positions in the institution.

Provas baseadas nos princípios de biologia molecular foram introduzidas com grande êxito nos laboratórios clínicos nos últimos anos, o que muito contribuiu para o aperfeiçoamento do diagnóstico de doenças infecciosas e parasitárias. Esse trabalho objetivou avaliar e comparar as dificuldades para implantação de diagnóstico molecular de doenças infecciosas e parasitárias em laboratórios de análises clínicas. Os dados foram coletados no ano de 2010, através de entrevistas com responsáveis técnicos por laboratórios de análises clínicas de duas cidades da região norte do Brasil, Araguaína (Estado do Tocantins) e Marabá (Estado do Pará). Entre os resultados, cita-se a ausência, nos laboratórios visitados, de profissionais habilitados para realizar exames de diagnóstico molecular; ao se questionar quanto à possível lucratividade ao realizar esses exames, mesmo considerando os custos para implantação, a maioria dos entrevistados de Araguaína respondeu que seria um método lucrativo, enquanto que a maioria dos de Marabá respondeu negativamente. Existem consensos como, por exemplo, que a lucratividade depende diretamente da demanda e que a localização geográfica dos municípios pouco interferiria caso existisse o interesse em implantar esse serviço. Concluiu-se que os profissionais atuantes em análises clínicas entrevistados nesse trabalho conhecem, mesmo que superficialmente, diagnóstico molecular e, que existem dúvidas quanto à lucratividade, à disponibilidade de pacientes/clientes para realização desses exames, entre outros fatores. Propõe-se a priorização de estratégias que levem ao aprimoramento das ferramentas moleculares no diagnóstico molecular de doenças infecciosas e parasitárias e, concomitantemente, propiciem a implantação das mesmas na rotina laboratorial nessas regiões.
