Humoral response and neutralization capacity of sheep serum inoculated with natural and Cobalt 60-irradiated Crotalus durissus terrificus venom (Laurenti, 1768)

Abstract: The aim of this work was to investigate antigen irradiation on crotalic antivenom and the capacity of sheep as serum producers. Twelve sheep in two groups of six were inoculated with Crotalus durissus terrificus venom. One group was inoculated with natural venom (NV) and the other with Cobalt 60 gamma-irradiated venom (IrV). Three antigen doses were given to the animals at monthly intervals for immunization. The toxic activity of the venom was assessed by LD50 determination in mice. Blood samples were collecte… Show more

“…This agrees with the findings of other authors (7,12,21,(31)(32)(33)(34)(35)(36)(37)(38)42), which assured that ionizing radiation has the property to attenuate venoms toxicity without altering immunological properties.…”

“…The principal physical agents are: x-ray radiation (19), ultraviolet radiation (46), heat (15), and gamma radiation (25). The latter, according to previous works (1,7,9,12,14,17,21,(31)(32)(33)(34)(35)(36)(37)(38)(41)(42)(43), has proved to be an excellent tool of detoxification, since it is able to reduce toxicity without altering immunogenicity. In addition, this radiation does not add any new substance to the venom.…”

“…However, adverse reactions mainly associated with the Fc activating complement ability of horse IgG have been described (21). For cases of hypersensitivity to horse serum, other animals have been tested as source of antivenoms; good results have been observed with goats, rabbits, and sheep (23,24,29).…”
