Abstract: Propolis, a beehive product widely used in folk medicine as an antiinflammatory agent, has been attracting researchers' attention to scientifically elucidate its biological properties and therapeutic activities. The aim of this paper was to study the possible effect of propolis on natural killer activity, since propolis immunomodulatory action has been suggested, especially on non-specific immunity. Propolis was produced by africanized honeybees (Apis mellifera L.), collected throughout a whole year, and poole… Show more

“…[7,16,17] The treatment of rats with Brazilian EEP increased the cytotoxic activity of natural killer cells against murine lymphoma. [18] Experiments by our group were designed to evaluate the effects of EEP in melanoma-bearing mice submitted to stress. After the inoculation of B16F10 cells subcutaneously, it was verified that stress induced a higher tumour area, while propolis-treated mice, stressed or not, showed melanoma development similar to the control.…”

“…Propolis composition is mainly determined by the phytogeographic characteristics of beehive surroundings (19). However, seasonal variation may occur within the same place (39). Also, variation was observed among samples collected in the same place, but by different A. mellifera subspecies (40).…”
