This study presents a checklist of lycophytes and ferns from secondary semideciduous forests in São João de Petrópolis, Santa Teresa, Espírito Santo, Brazil. We recorded 37 species (four lycophytes and 33 ferns) belonging to nine families and 17 genera. Selaginella is the only genus representing lycophytes whereas Adiantum, Anemia and Asplenium are the main representative genera for ferns. Most species are lithophytes (48.6%) or terrestrial (21.6%). Epiphytes are scarce (8.2%), and we did not record any arborescent, hemiepiphyte or scandent species. Climate seasonality, reduced size of forest fragments, and disturbance history may explain the low richness in the site. We recorded the occurrence of a regionally threatened fern species, namely, Asplenium austrobrasiliense, and revealed the first record of Asplenium otites in Espírito Santo. This demonstrates the biological relevance of semideciduous forest remnants in Espírito Santo and reinforces arguments for their effective protection. ResumoEste estudo apresenta uma lista de licófitas e samambaias de florestas semidecíduas secundárias em São João de Petrópolis, Santa Teresa, Espírito Santo, Brasil. Registramos 37 espécies (quatro licófitas e 33 samambaias) pertencentes a nove famílias e 17 gêneros. Selaginella é o único gênero representando as licófitas, enquanto Adiantum, Anemia e Asplenium são os principais gêneros representativos de samambaias. A maioria das espécies são litófitas (48,6%) ou terrestres (21,6%). Epífitas são escassas (8,2%) e não registramos nenhuma espécie arborescente, hemiepífita ou escandente. A sazonalidade climática, o tamanho reduzido dos fragmentos florestais e o histórico de perturbações podem explicar a baixa riqueza no local. Registramos a ocorrência de uma espécie de samambaia ameaçada regionalmente, a saber, Asplenium austrobrasiliense, e revelamos o primeiro registro de Asplenium otites no Espírito Santo. Isso demonstra a relevância biológica de remanescentes de floresta semidecídua no Espírito Santo e reforça os argumentos para a sua proteção efetiva. ABSTRACT. This study was conducted in one region of a Seasonal Semideciduous Forest located in Tapurah (Mato Grosso State, Brazil) with the aim of studying its floristic and structural composition. The fixed area method was applied to 10 × 250 m clusters, allocating and measuring five clusters with five subunits of 500 m² each. Species with a diameter at breast height greater than or equal to 10 cm were considered, and the sample sufficiency of the floristic survey was verified by a species accumulation curve. The similarities between the sample subunits were calculated by the Jaccard Similarity Index, and the species diversity with the Shannon Diversity Index and Pielou Evenness Index. The horizontal vegetation structure was characterized by density, frequency, dominance and the values of ecological importance, and diametric distribution were assessed by the Spiegel procedure. The families Vochysiaceae, Fabaceae and Sapindaceae were highly represented, and Qualea paraensis, Aspidosperma discolor and Matayba arborescens were the most important species. A high diversity and low ecological dominance were found, and the diametric structure of the trees presented a negative exponential distribution. In general, the structure, floristic composition and richness of vegetation correspond to a forest with stable and autoregenerative community after selective logging.

Neotropical Biology and Conservation 15(2): AbstractAmong the various applications of phytosociology, the evaluation of natural regeneration is of great importance, mainly because it provides insights for ecological restoration. The objective of this study was to analyze the composition and phytosociological parameters of shrub and tree vegetation in areas Neotropical Biology and Conservation 15(2): 89-106 (2020) of plantation of eucalyptus (Corymbia citriodora) and areas of native forest in the Ibura National Forest, located in the Sergipe state of northeastern Brazil. For this purpose, 20 plots were sampled and all individuals with a diameter at breast height (DBH) ≥ 8 cm were measured. Sampling revealed 821 individuals in the forest area and 1,000 in the eucalyptus area. These individuals represent 84 species and the areas presented a significant difference in species composition, with 61 in the eucalyptus area and 65 in the Forest area, and only 40 species were common to both areas. There was a predominance of pioneer individuals in the eucalyptus area. There also was a significant difference in basal area, relative density and relative dominance, but no significant differences were observed in average height. It was concluded that a period of 35 years is insufficient for the recovery of the eucalyptus area, which remains in a more initial successional stage than the forest area. ResumoEntre as várias aplicações da fitossociologia, a avaliação da regeneração natural possui grande importância, principalmente porque fornece subsídios para restauração ecológica. Diante disso, este trabalho foi realizado com o objetivo de analisar a composição e os parâmetros fitossociológicos da vegetação arbustivo-arbórea em áreas de plantio de eucalipto (Corymbia citriodora) e de mata nativa na Floresta Nacional do Ibura, no estado de Sergipe. Para esta finalidade, foram demarcadas 20 parcelas e amostrados todos os indivíduos com diâmetro à altura do peito (DAP) ≥ 8 cm. A amostragem revelou 821 indivíduos na área de mata e 1.000 para a área de eucalipto. Esses indivíduos representam 84 espécies e as áreas apresentaram diferença significativa na composição de espécies, sendo 61 na área de eucalipto e 65 na área de floresta, e apenas 40 comuns a ambas as áreas.
