Este artigo procura divulgar a trajetória científica do ecologista húngaro Josef Hauser (1920-2004), que viveu no Brasil e sobre o qual pouco se escreveu. O texto procura contribuir com o campo da história das ciências, apresentando elementos da atuação do cientista, abarcando seu engajamento científico e na proteção ambiental, cruzando-os com a recente descontinuação de departamentos de pesquisa na Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos, em decorrência da crise econômica por que passa o Brasil. A pesquisa valeu-se de artigos científicos, jornais, materiais de laboratório, fotografias e relatórios de pesquisa do investigador e procura contribuir para a memória científica local.
