Mangrove forests are ecosystems naturally susceptible to environmental stresses, such as rising sea level and coastal erosion. However, the anthropic stresses, such as real estate speculation, deforestation and water pollution, put at risk this environment's stability, interfering with its balance. The present work's aim is to perform a temporal analysis of the mangrove forest that is a part of the Mocajuba river hydrographic basin and its buffer zone, as well as identifying natural and anthropic stresses to which the mangroves are susceptible. It was verified that the mangrove forest areas presented a substantial reduction between 1984 and 1999, and a small loss between 1999 and 2018. Thus, in the mangrove forest buffer zone, the anthropized areas increased while the forest areas decreased, demonstrating the deforestation in these areas. It can be concluded that the mangrove forest in the study region present a regression.

Mangroves provide a unique ecological environment for complex microbial communities, which play important roles in biogeochemical cycles, such as those for carbon, sulfur, and nitrogen. Microbial diversity analyses of these ecosystems help us understand the changes caused by external influences. Amazonian mangroves occupy an area of 9000 km2, corresponding to 70% of the mangroves in Brazil, on which studies of microbial biodiversity are extremely scarce. The present study aimed to determine changes in microbial community structure along the PA-458 highway, which fragmented a mangrove zone. Mangrove samples were collected from three zones, (i) degraded, (ii) in the process of recovery, and (iii) preserved. Total DNA was extracted and submitted for 16S rDNA amplification and sequencing on an MiSeq platform. Subsequently, reads were processed for quality control and biodiversity analyses. The most abundant phyla were Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Bacteroidetes in all three mangrove locations, but in significantly different proportions. We observed a considerable reduction in diversity in the degraded zone. Important genera involved in sulfur, carbon, and nitrogen metabolism were absent or dramatically reduced in this zone. Our results show that human impact in the mangrove areas, caused by the construction of the PA-458 highway, has resulted in a loss of biodiversity.

Death and Regeneration of an Amazonian Mangrove Forest by Anthropic and Natural Forces

The Amazon Macrotidal Mangrove Coast contains the most extensive and continuous mangrove belt globally, occupying an area of ~6500 km2 and accounting for 4.2% of global mangroves. The tallest and densest mangrove forests in the Amazon occur on the Bragança Peninsula. However, road construction that occurred in 1973 caused significant mangrove degradation in the area. A spatial-temporal analysis (1986–2019) based on optical, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), drone images, and altimetric data obtained by photogrammetry and validated by a topographic survey were carried out to understand how the construction of a road led to the death of mangroves. The topographic data suggested that this road altered the hydrodynamical flow, damming tidal waters. This process killed at least 4.3 km2 of mangrove trees. Nevertheless, due to natural mangrove recolonization, the area exhibiting degraded mangrove health decreased to ~2.8 km2 in 2003 and ~0.73 km2 in 2019. Climatic extreme events such as “El Niño” and “La Niña” had ephemeral control over the mangrove degradation/regeneration. In contrast, the relative sea-level rise during the last several decades caused long-term mangrove recolonization, expanding mangrove areas from lower to higher tidal flats. Permanently flooded depressions in the study area, created by the altered hydrodynamical flow due to the road, are unlikely to be recolonized by mangroves unless connections are re-established between these depressions with drainage on the Caeté estuary through pipes or bridges to prevent water accumulation between the road and depressions. To minimize impacts on mangroves, this road should have initially been designed to cross mangrove areas on the highest tidal flats and to skirt the channel headwaters to avoid interruption of regular tidal flow.
