Epigenetics and genetic determinism

Abstract: This paper posits that the gene-centered viewpoint of the organism (gene-centrism) is not enough to explain biological complexity. Organisms are not completely determined by their genomes; rather, living beings can be seen as interpreters or intentional systems. Epigenetics is the framework that allows the avoidance of gene-centrism and permits the emergence of a more holistic standpoint where determination and novelty can coexist, as shown with examples taken from developmental biology and macromolecules fold… Show more

“…On the one hand, epigenetics may serve as argument against gene-centric views of human identity and health, often referred to as ‘genetic essentialism’ and/or ‘genetic determinism’ (Burbano, 2006: 861; Canning, 2008; Gonon and Moisan, 2013: 29; Kuzawa and Sweet, 2009: 11; Lock, 2015: 152). On the other hand, epigenetics may also serve as argument against controversial claims that social and other environmental influences are more important for individuality (e.g.…”
