Atualização em pneumonia comunitária viral

Abstract: Viral pneumonia is a prevalent cause of respiratory infection in immunocompetent adults. It has varied presentation, from mild to severe respiratory failure, requiring mechanical ventilation. However, in Brazil, there have been few studies on the clinical presentation and diagnosis of this infection. Thus, the authors of the present article intend to review the main viral agents that cause community-acquired pneumonia and to discuss the currently available diagnostic and therapeutic methods.

“…However 85 samples infected with INFB were detected in these same subjects (Table 2). INFB usually causes disease in populations confined to closed spaces, such as daycare centers and boarding schools [15]. Our results show the positive percentages of INFB in the preschool and school children groups were higher than that in the infants and toddlers groups (p < 0.01) (Table 3).…”

“…[ 6 , 7 , 9 12 ] However, positivity in virus PCR, which indicates the presence of viral genomes, may not always imply an active infection, because false positivity is possible in the cases of past infection or colonization by the virus. [ 13 ] However, positive culture of virus, which demonstrates the presence of viable virus, strongly suggests active infection. We believe that identification of living virus by culture from BAL is the most reliable method of proving a virus to be the pathogen.…”

“…[ 4 12 ] Parainfluenza virus (PIV), influenza virus, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) are the 3 most common respiratory viruses documented in LRTI and are the important pathogens which can potentially lead to fatal outcomes particularly in immunocompromised patients. [ 13 18 ]…”

“…Even with advances in diagnosis and treatment, about 450 million people are still affected every year in the world. In Latin America, up to 1.5 million children under the age of five are infected, leading to the death of approximately 4 million annually [8][9][10]. Brazil is one of the countries with the highest number of cases [8].…”
