BackgroundYoung people between the ages of 15 and 24 years are both the most at risk of HIV and the greatest hope for turning the tide against HIV/AIDS. Although various surveys have been done on sexual behaviour of youth in Ethiopia, studies assessing the effect of emergency oral contraceptives on condom utilization of university students are lacking.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted in two major universities of Ethiopia from January to May 2011 using structured self administered questionnaire with the aim to assess the effect of introducing oral emergency contraceptive pills on condom utilization and sexual risk taking behaviours among female university students. Study participants were selected by simple random sampling using the list from the associate registrars of each University. Data were entered, cleaned and analyzed using SPSS version 17.0. Bivariate and multiple logistic regression analyses were used to determine factors associated with condom utilization.Resultsa total of 623 students out of 660 were included giving response rate of 94.4%. A total of 103(16.5%) had history of sexual intercourse and nearly half (45.6%) of them had sex before the age of 20 years. Forty (6.4%) students had history of sexually transmitted infections (STI). Sixty seven percent of students had heard about emergency oral contraceptives. One hundred and ninety one (45.7%) of students believe that EOC is effective in preventing pregnancy. Believing that EOC is effective in preventing pregnancy (adjusted Odds ratio, AOR = 0.22 95% CI 0.06, 0.87), condom prevents STI (AOR = 10.37, 95% CI 1.73, 62.24) and younger age below 20 years (AOR = 11.68 95% CI 1.25, 109.19) were statistically significantly associated with condom use.Conclusiona significant number of students had history of sexual intercourse and used emergency contraception. The belief in the effectiveness of EOC negatively affects condom use. The preference for the pill may make teenagers less prepared to practice STI protective behaviours in specific situations. Therefore, there is an urgent need to educate young people in universities about reproductive health and family planning and skills on how to prevent HIV/STIs including unwanted pregnancy.

As infecções pelo Vírus da Imunodeficiência Humana atingem índices alarmantes no mundo, principalmente em jovens, uma vez que o uso de preservativo é menor entre os jovens. O objetivo desse estudo foi avaliar a principal fonte de orientação sobre o uso de preservativos entre estudantes dos cursos de saúde da Universidade do Estado do Pará, sua frequência de uso e as razões do não uso. Trata-se de um estudo transversal, prospectivo e descritivo que incluiu estudantes matriculados em cursos de graduação em saúde usando um questionário on-line. Participam do estudo 86 alunos. O tema sexualidade foi considerado fechado na família. A universidade foi apontada como a principal fonte de informação referente ao tema. A maioria afirmou ter utilizado o preservativo na última relação e sempre se previne, porém confessou já ter negligenciado o uso em algum momento por descuido, confiança no parceiro ou não querer usar.. Conclui-se que os participantes fazem uso do método de forma irregular, mesmo referindo terem elevado conhecimento sobre a questão. Apesar de serem futuros multiplicadores de informações, os alunos pesquisados demonstraram não fazer na prática aquilo que irão ensinar a seus futuros pacientes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the main source of guidance on the use of condoms among students of health courses at Pará State University, frequency of use, and reasons for not using them. This was a cross-sectional, prospective, descriptive study that included students enrolled in undergraduate health courses using an online questionnaire. Eighty-six students participated by answering the questionnaire. The subject of sexuality was considered an unmentioned topic in the family. The university was considered the main source of information on this topic. Most claimed to have used a condom the last time they had sexual intercourse and to be always preventive; however they already admitted to have neglected the use, on occasion, only because they had confidence in their partnet, or simply because they did not want to use one. In conclusion, participants used the method irregularly, despite indicating strong knowledge on the matter. Although they are future information disseminators, were inconsistent in practicing what they will one day be teaching to their future patients. Resumo

Para facilitar a leitura, os artigos são organizados por área de interesse. Para aproveitar ao máximo o limitado espaço editorial, não são incluídos os nomes dos autores dos artigos. Entretanto, a referência completa é oferecida ao final do artigo. O resultado final traz o que há de melhor do artigo, seguido de uma sintética interpretação pessoal. Endereçado ao médico ocupado, esperamos que esta inciativa possa contribuir para o sucesso da translação do conhecimento da evidência científica para a prática clínica. Recently, papers published in the main Brazilian medical journals are carefully selected and analyzed by skilled medical editors. In addition, we asked editors to choose keywords to be highlighted in order to call the reader' s attention. Articles are organized by area of interest to facilitate reading. To get the most of the limited available editorial space we did not include the names of the authors of the related articles in the text itself, but a complete reference guide is provided at the end of the article. The result carries the best from the original paper accompanied by a personal interpretation. Directed to the busy medical doctor, we hope that this initiative may contribute to the successful translation of knowledge from scientific evidence to clinical practice.
