Abstract: This third article of the series "An Overview of Research Designs Relevant to Nursing" presents the use of mixed or multiple methods in nursing research. The use of mixed or multiple methods is a growing trend that offers another option for researchers in addressing the complex health problems faced in nursing today. Understanding of all methods and all combinations of methods facilitate the conduction and dissemination of research to serve nursing practice.

“…Within this framework, it is important to point out that MM utilizes and combines quantitative and qualitative perspectives within a single study to answer research questions and test hypotheses (Driessnack, et al 2007;Frels and Onwuegbuzie 2013;Johnson and Onwergbuzie 2004). Hamui-Sutton (2013: 212) states: "[MM] is more than just the sum of [these two research models], [given that] during the interphase process […] the limitations of both models are remedied, while at the same time creating a broader panorama that strengthens the validity of the […] results".…”

“…The design allowed the researcher to observe multiple variables at a given point in time using an online survey methodology. The design was useful to describe, examine and differentiate associations among and between two or more identified study variables (Sousa, Driessnack & Mendes, 2007). Rather than manipulating the independent variables, a correlational design allowed the researcher to observe data for patterns of responses while using statistical procedures to determine the direction and strength of the relationships as they naturally existed.…”

“…Similarly, this review supports the same result because most of the publications included in the review used a quantitative technique rather than a qualitative or mixed methodology approach. The use of diverse or multiple methods is becoming more popular, giving nursing researchers another option for addressing numerous aspects [12].…”
