Objective: to understand the feelings experienced by women when they are diagnosed with breast cancer. Method: qualitative, descriptive and exploratory study, with 13 women assisted by a social assistance organization. The production of the data occurred through an audio interview recorded and guided by the question: what were the feelings experienced when the diagnosis of breast cancer was received? Data analysis was based on the Content Analysis technique. Results: upon receiving the diagnosis of breast cancer, women expressed feelings such as despair, concern for the family, closeness and fear of death, sadness, denial, faith in healing and acceptance. Conclusion: in an attempt to minimize these repercussions of the disease, it is important to work in a support network to receive, care and guide women at the time of diagnosis, seeking to direct them to the possibilities of treatment, cure and rehabilitation. Descriptors: Breast Neoplasms; Clinical Diagnosis; Emotions. RESUMOObjetivo: compreender os sentimentos vivenciados pelas mulheres ao receberem o diagnóstico de câncer de mama. Método: estudo qualitativo, descritivo e exploratório, com 13 mulheres assistidas por uma entidade de assistência social. A produção dos dados ocorreu por meio de entrevista de áudio gravada e norteada pela questão: quais os sentimentos vivenciados quando recebeu o diagnóstico de câncer de mama? A análise dos dados foi a partir da técnica de Análise de Conteúdo. Resultados: ao receberem o diagnóstico de câncer de mama, as mulheres manifestaram sentimentos como desespero, preocupação com a família, proximidade e medo da morte, tristeza, negação, fé na cura e aceitação. Conclusão: na tentativa de minimizar tais repercussões da doença, faz-se importante o trabalho de uma rede de apoio a fim de acolher, cuidar e orientar as mulheres no momento do diagnóstico, buscando direcioná-las para as possibilidades de tratamento, cura e reabilitação. Background: The evaluation of quality of life in cancer patients is of interest to researchers due to its impact on health policies. The aim of this study was to assess the quality of life of patients with breast and gynecological cancer, undergoing chemotherapy. Methods and Findings:This was a quantitative, descriptive and longitudinal study, conducted in the Clinical Hospital of the Triangulo Mineiro Federal University. To assess the quality of life, the Portuguese brief version of the World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHO-QOL-BREF) instrument was applied. The paired Student's t-test was used for the analysis of the means of/ the scores of the domains. The study included 14 women. The lowest means were observed in the physical domain, 51.78±15.89 and 50.25±15.37, respectively before and after treatment. There was also a compromise of the psychological and environment domains, however, the data analyzed did not show statistical significance. The main limitation of this study is the sample size.

RESUMO:O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a intensidade da depressão em pacientes diagnosticadas com câncer de mama em tratamento hospitalar em uma cidade da região Oeste do Paraná. Foi realizada uma investigação, em que os sujeitos envolvidos responderam a um questionário que faz referência aos sintomas e atitudes frequentes em pacientes depressivos, intitulado Inventário de Depressão de Beck (BDI). Foram avaliadas 20 mulheres, com média de idade 57,35 (±11,24). A análise evidenciou 70% de mulheres com grau mínimo de depressão, 15% com grau leve e 5% com grau moderado. Foi expressivo o percentual de pacientes que referiram não se sentir culpadas, punidas, decepcionadas consigo ou que perderam o interesse pelos outros. Concluiu-se que embora o câncer de mama ocasione repercussões psicológicas importantes para o desenvolvimento da depressão, a amostra da população estudada não pontuou sintomas depressivos graves. DEPRESSION IN PATIENTS WITH BREAST CANCER IN HOSPITAL TREATMENTABSTRACT: The present study aimed to evaluate the intensity of depression in patients diagnosed with breast cancer in hospital treatment in a city in western Paraná. An investigation was performed where subjects involved answered a questionnaire that refers to the common symptoms and attitudes in depressive patients, called the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Twenty women were evaluated, with mean age 57,35 (± 11.24). The analysis showed 70% of women with a minimal degree of depression, 15% with a mild degree and 5% with a moderate degree. The percentage of patients who reported not feeling guilty, punished, disappointed with themselves or who lost interest in others was expressive. It was concluded that although breast cancer causes important psychological repercussions for the development of depression, the sample population studied did not score severe depressive symptoms.
