Abstract: Estudo de caso objetivando conhecer quais os principais fatores que conduzem um idoso a procurar uma Instituição de Longa Permanência e de que maneira logra sua adaptação a este ambiente. Utilizou-se para coleta de dados as técnicas de história de vida e a observação não participante. O período de coleta foi de abril a julho de 2006. Foram entrevistadas nove idosas.
