Abstract: Olive (Olea europaea L.) shows alternate bearing, with unreliable cropping patterns and inconsistent fruit size and quality every year. In many countries, thinning with naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) is used to minimise alternate bearing behavior in olives. However, in Italy, growers are reluctant to employ this practice and no detailed knowledge is available for specifi c cultivars. We evaluated the effects of spraying NAA on various dates on the productive and vegetative characteristics of the main Italian tab… Show more

“…Within the same orchard category, OAY increased when the planting density increased, while AY exhibited the opposite trend ( Table 1 ). Fruit set and fruit fresh weight may influence AY [ 14 ] along with planting density. The ratio between production and canopy volume (kg m −3 ) was generally higher for denser plantations, ranging from 1.6 to 3.1 kg m −3 for orchards with 70 trees ha −1 and 408 trees ha −1 , respectively, though there were exceptions due to specific orchard constraints.…”

“…Spray of naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) induced an adequate fruit thinning and increased profitability (Ebert and Kreuz, 1987) as well as improved apple fruit weight and size (Ebert, 1987). Also, using NAA shortly after full bloom is commonly practiced to decrease olive fruit thinning bud increase fruit size (Qureshi et al, 2012 andBarone et al, 2014).…”

“…Biennial bearing is a major horticultural and economical drawback of olive cultivation, which particularly affects the olive oil industry (Dag et al, 2009). Using naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) shortly after full bloom is commonly practiced to increase olive fruit thinning but increase fruit size (Birger et al, 2008;Dag et al, 2009;Qureshi et al, 2012 andBarone et al, 2014). Nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium are major elements found in large quatities in different tree organs.…”

“…This fact generates important problems for the grower, as well as for processing industries, especially in regard to table olives (AL- SHDIEFAT & QRUNFLEH 2008, BARONE et al 2014, because in strong harvest years, the commercial caliber of the fruits decreases drastically, with notable depreciation of the product (MOREIRA et al 2016).…”
